She didn't answer right away. She moved closer and rested her head on his shoulder, drawing invisible shapes on his leg with her finger. She closed her eyes and listened to the sound of cars passing in the distance. B: Yes - she suddenly said. C: "Yes" what? B: You asked me something. C: What? The girl thought for a moment, then laughed again. B: I don't know. Hey, are you feeling hot, too? C: Normally - Cade looked over the clothes she was wearing. - You're always wearing those baggy clothes.

A thin layer of snow covered the streets, falling onto Bianca’s hair as she walked toward the field, her heart pounding. She spotted a boy sitting in the stands with a phone in his hand. He looked at her as she approached.

At the table sat a boy Bianca recognised from school and two other girls. C: Are you with April? B: I am. You know her? He laughed. C: Who doesn't know her? I'm Cade, and this is Holly and Riley. The girl introduced as Holly kicked away the chair standing opposite her. H: Sit down, let's have a drink. April's friends are our friends. Right, Cade? - She looked at him meaningfully.

B: "Baggy"? C: Hoodies, sweaters. That kind of casual clothing. B: What's wrong with that? C: Could you dress, I don't know… more girly? B: What do you mean, like? C: Something a little brighter - he thought for a moment. - Something delicate. A skirt, flowers, lace. Something that highlights, you know what I mean.

Bianca imagined herself like that - delicate, girlish, pretty. If Cade liked her better that way, maybe it was worth a try?

B: Should I be afraid? - she asked playfully. C: If you're afraid of abandoned places, then yes. But don't worry, I'll protect you from the ghosts. B: I'm not afraid of ghosts. Or abandoned places, either. C: Brave - he said, then his gaze shifted for a second to something behind her. - What are you afraid of? Bianca thought for a moment. She was afraid of many things, but she didn’t want to explain them to him. She didn’t want to say why she was afraid of loneliness, rejection, herself, or the idea that someone might see her as inadequate. It felt like admitting to a weakness that no one should ever know about. B: Nothing - she said. C: Come on, everyone’s afraid of something. B: And you? C: I asked first. B: Spiders - she sighed. - I'm afraid of spiders. C: I knew.

After a few dozen minutes, they were sitting with their backs against the crates behind them, laughing at things that suddenly seemed quite funny. Cade had his hand resting on Bianca’s thigh without a care in the world, and she was practically melting under his warmth. B: I feel like I'm swimming - she said in a cracked voice, and she found that funny, too. C: You like it?

Bianca nodded, but the strange feeling lingered. The boy placed his hand on her back and stroked it gently. C: Don't be mad, Bianca - he said urgently. B: I'm not. After a moment, she laughed briefly. She shouldn't be upset. She and Cade aren't even in a relationship. She's never heard him say anything to suggest that she means anything to him. They spent time together, kissed sometimes, but that was it. She decided it would be best to forget about Sadie. She and Cade had broken up, and now there was Bianca. She was hoping she’d soon become Cade’s girlfriend.

Bianca blinked rapidly, repeating his words in her mind. Despite her condition, she was sure that Cade had called her by another girl’s name. B: "Sadie"? C: What "Sadie"? B: You called me "Sadie". Cade sighed heavily. C: Really? B: Cade, you called me "Sadie"! C: Sorry. Bianca looked at him expectantly. C: I told you about her. We broke up recently. It’s just a habit.
