He used to babysit the kids (he would always babysit Will for free if Jonathan had to work, babysat Mike if Nancy was busy, sometimes babysat Dustin & Lucas) and is able to get them to talk to him by promising he won't tell his dad, gets involved with the Upside Down that way, misses his baby sister Sara but also loves his baby sister Ellie-Jane so much
After Hopper dies he stays in Hawkins but has to move to the trailer park (says it's because of money but it's also very much about being there for Max), sees flickering lights in Eddie's trailer and runs over because Upside Down trauma and is able to save Chrissy that way
