“Rompiendo Botellas” by Caen Rayos: EP Review
Rompiendo Botellas, or Breaking Bottles for English speakers too lazy to use Google translate, is a fit title for this pocket-sized EP. Sounding like the aftermath of a night spent smashing bottles against the wall, Rompiendo is much like the following hangover - a bit hazy, speech still sluggish, and feet dragging behind as you wipe dried vomit from your chin. The EP starts with “Zuff”, a grungy number with enough fuzz to leave us feeling full. Being a two person band, Caen Rayos manage to round out all three songs with an EP that sounds anything but lacking.
The second track, “Perro Gigante”, rolls through with a pace that proves more upbeat than “Zuff”. And “Perdido” finishes us off and with the three songs in mind, a common theme is felt: a steady drumbeat throughout with a guitar that stays in its lane (no obnoxious solos for either of these guys). On the downside, the vocals throughout Rompiendo Botellas drone on a bit to the point of losing the listener’s enthusiasm, but the melodies provided show a lot of promise. Caen Rayos’ intention is obvious, they fit right into the slot of garage rock coming on the scene these past couple of years and with a full-length, Caen Rayos could soon be a garage rock powerhouse.
