"A history book? That’s surprising for a kid you’re age," he muttered more to the sky than her. He sat perched on a load of cargo, watching the ship in the harbour prepare to set out. The voyage was meant for the research team he’d been newly enlisted too, and he was bored stiff with the waiting.

"Your parents must think you a child prodigy," he said somewhat sarcastically, lighting a cigarette.

She shifted her hold on the large book she carried with her, often trying to find places to read where the other kids wouldn't bother her. Sometimes the sailors and occasional pirates let her stay until they sailed, she offered advice about things to avoid to not die.

"They are never home, so I don't know if they even think of me."
