Washington high school gunman texted victims to meet at table before shooting ...
Facebook Jaylen Fryberg, the 15-year-old shooter at Marysville Pilchuk in Washington state, allegedly lured his five victims to a cafeteria table by text message before pulling out a handgun and opening fire. The high school gunman in Washington State who shot five classmates last week set the table for murder — he texted all five, inviting them to meet him for lunch in the cafeteria, the local sheriff said Monday.
The unsuspecting teens were all seated at a lunch table inside Marysville Pilchuck High School Friday when Jaylen Fryberg pulled out a .40-caliber Beretta handgun and shot each one, said the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Before the 15-year-old fatally turned the gun on himself, Zoe Galasso, 14, was shot dead at the scene. Gia Soriano, also 14, was taken off life support Sunday while three others, including two of Fryberg’s cousins, were also injured — two of which critically.
The murder weapon was legally owned and registered to a family member of Fryberg’s, though it’s not clear how the teen got his hands on it, Sheriff Ty Trenary said at a press conference.
Fryberg, who was recently crowned homecoming prince and came from a prominent Tulalip Indian tribe family, did not leave behind a note. Investigators say they are still combing through text messages to determine a possible motive. “I don’t know if the ‘why’ is going to be something we can provide,” said Trenary.
Authorities also announced that a first-year teacher attributed with confronting the shooter did not have physical contact with him during the incident as initially believed.
That teacher, Megan Silberberger, had been hailed a hero after students described her as intercepting the gunman as he paused as if to reload his weapon.
As of Monday Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, 14, and Andrew Fryberg, 15, are listed in critical condition at area hospitals while Nate Hatch, 14, is listed in serious condition. Andrew Fryberg via Twitter Andrew Fryberg, a student at Marysville Pilchuck High School, was one of those shot Friday. Enlarge Nate Hatch via Facebook Nate Hatch was another shooting victim. Hatch and Fryberg have been identified as cousins of the young shooter.
In an astonishing display of forgiveness for the teen shooter, Hatch tweeted a message to him Sunday reading: “I love you and I forgive you Jaylen rest in peace.”
That post followed a tweet that read: “Worst pain ive ever felt in my life.”
While the cause of the shooting remains under investigation, students have claimed that it was over a spurned love triangle involving two of Fryberg’s victims. Shaylee Chuckulnaskit via Facebook Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, 14, was listed in critical condition.
Ninth-grader Bella Panjeli, who attended another school but was friends with one of the female victims, told CBC that Fryberg had been in an ongoing dispute with one of his cousins over one of the girls.
“I heard he asked her out and she rebuffed him and was with his cousin,” Panjeli said while citing a conversation with one of the victim’s family and friends. “It was a fight over a girl.”
Jarron Webb, 15, also told the Seattle Times that Fryberg had been angry over one of the girls refusing to date him.
“We are devastated by this senseless tragedy,” read a statement released on behalf of Soriano’s family late Sunday. “Gia is our beautiful daughter, and words cannot express how much we will miss her.”
The high school will remain closed this week as the community at nearby Tulalip Indian reservation mourns.
