In light of the recent news that “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” is going off of Netflix at the end of this week, I’ve decided to write something in participation with @/ lupincentral ‘s #cagliostrorewatch initiative. I hope y’all enjoy :)
In terms of the Lupin franchise, this was the second movie I watched, back during Thanksgiving of 2021. I think I've seen it at least six times now, both the Streamline dub and original sub versions that were available on Netflix. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty darn good movie, with an enjoyable plot and wonderful visuals.
As Hayao Miyazaki's directorial debut, it has a good mix both of Lupin and Miyazaki hallmarks. I really love Miyazaki's take on all of the Lupin characters, you can tell he's got a pretty good understanding of everyone.
It is a little more Miyazaki than Lupin I think, and I don't think it really shows how the characters usually interact in most of the series, but I still think it's a pretty good way to get into the series.
Overall, I think that Castle of Cagliostro is a lovely and classic movie, and a great watch both for its legacy in animation history and as an installment of the Lupin franchise.
