Today was sooooo hot!!!
Well, we took Coal to the dogrun today because it is Sunday. It was around 2:30 ish so we figured there would be a LOT of dogs (plus this week begins the grand holiday of Golden week!) Well, I guess everyone went on trips because he didn't get many options.
When we first got there, there was a type of poodle with brown fur. A little shorter in height then Coal and definitely lithe. The dog would not greet Coal at all. Coal, the silly dog, decided to launch himself at a full charge. -_- Of course, the poodle dog ran off and Coal gave chase because his mind is simple: run away means play. The owner was nice, he explained that his dog was afraid of bigger dogs. Okay. So I leashed Coal, and we tried a couple of times, but it was a no go. The guy eventually left on his own (I felt bad about that, but oh well).
Coal had some time on his own. It was definitely very hot today, even I was getting sleepy! Summer is really gonna suck, especially if he doesn't blow coat.
A new set of dogs came in. Scottish Terriers! One was bigger than the other, wearing blue. I will call him Blue Dog. The other was wearing some kind of pink collar. I am not sure what kind of greetings ensued, or maybe Coal was just tired and hot or just hot, but I definitely felt like the blue Dog was a fun police. Now Coal was bigger, but he completely deferred to the Blue Dog. Laying down, flattening ears, etc. I think I saw the Blue Dog kind of snap or growl at Coal's over-excited greeting, not sure--it was kind of far. Blue Dog's tail was always straight up like a radar. Coal kept his at half mast. Once or twice, the Blue Dog put his head on Coal's shoulder, or "embraced" him, which makes he think he was trying to mount Coal in an awkward way. Here is the thing. If at any time, Coal attempted to play with the smaller (and, in my opinion, friendly) dog, the Blue dog would immediately interpose himself between the two. It reminded me of almost exactly the same situation I saw in the photo guide by Brenda Aloff about dog interactions.
Coal just gave up. He lay down every time that Blue Dog came near him, and just stopped trying. It made me really sad. Despite his resource guarding, Coal is not an aggressive type. He doesn't want trouble--he just wants to play. Probably is, it seems like 90% of the dogs in our cities (we are on the cusp of two small cities) are small dogs that seem to not handle playing with other dogs well. True, in the case of the poodle, Coal was completely at fault, but the second case happens fairly frequently. All the small dogs he has met have attitude.
We DID see another Shiba walking on the other side of the fence, but they never came in :( Maybe Sunday BEFORE lunch will be better. We will keep trying different times until we can find a match for him. But with hotter days (it gets over 90 F (I think average is between 35-39 Celsius) with high humidity. I'm already trying to think of how to help him out during the summer. Luckily, the living room is well air conditioned at that time...but upstairs and outside... :(
Oh, after the dogrun, we took him into the store. Coal has been amazing me with his good attitude around people, even crowded areas like that service station last week and the store this week. Store rules is that they MUST be in the provided pet carts (a staff member gave us a pee pad, though it was really unnecessary for Coal as he had just gone outside). To prevent him from jumping, we tethered him with his leash. He managed to twist that up well several times XD Anyway, everyone wanted to pet him ^_^ He was very good natured about it, though he might have still been trying to cool down. We took him to the pet shop where we bought him. Several of the staff recognized him (or maybe they recognized me, the foreigner who bought him lol) so he got tons of attention.
