This women has had feminism thrown into her face as if it was a bad thing from such a young age. She did not try to change others opinions on feminism instead she evolved her definition into a even more positive one as she heard a new negative comment on feminism. As a Nigerian woman she was put down and ignored or looked down upon as she walked into establishments. She was successful and still a man becomes thanked for her hard earned money .
In an act of "sick and twisted" irony, Canada's new prostitution law takes effect on December 6, the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre and a day now set aside to mourn violence against women.
I wish I had known about December 6th and the fact that its "the national day of remembrance and action on violence against women" sooner! Though part of me questions if it is real or not since I have never heard of it. Nonetheless, after reading this article, I feel like it is something that more people in the country need to read and become aware of. Like I've stated in class, many people turn a blind eye to things that are not directly affecting them, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen to other people. I'm torn because part of me believes that this law is for the benefit of those women - its for their safety, but at the same time, it's not up to lawmakers and other individuals to be the one to tell someone else what they should do with their lives.
Earlier in the year, Shailene Woodley unintentionally became a part of the anti-feminist movement discussion due to her comments about feminism, or at least
Probably after hearing all the backlash from her initial views, she tried to change what she said, but she still doesn't seem to know what feminism is. She believes it's "giving women all the power" and that feminism aims for a world completely run by women and only women. She's using all these other words like "sisterhood" because she thinks it has a better meaning than feminism, yet she doesn't even know the true definition. Also, from watching her interviews, I think Shailene likes to maintain a very free-spirited, organic image, and she likes to act like she's anti-mainstream (despite Divergent). This may affect what she says, and young girls will start believing that feminism is a nasty word because of an uninformed, but very famous, actress.
We need more organizations like this
Ellen touches on a lot of points that were made in the video on gendered marketing that we watched in class, such as the higher cost of 'pink', but also makes jokes that women need special pens because they can't read of write. She also jokes about the pay gap and the products made to improve men's lives vs women's lives.
This picture demonstrates the pay gap that exists between men and women. Women tend to earn lower salaries than men despite having the same profession as them. Women equally work as hard a man does, but sadly does not get the recognition she deserves. This is one of the biggest consequences of having a male-dominated society. They see men as being “smarter than women”, “stronger than women”, and “putting more knowledge and effort into their work than women”. If a woman works twice as harder than a man does, the man would still earn a higher salary than the woman. This has to end. A new beginning has to be created where equal pay is granted to both women and men.
