*Friday Night Cajun Jam* La Maison de Begnaud Scott, Louisiana . I had the BEST time at the Begnaud House last night. . It was built just after the Civil War and sat in disrepair for years. It was saved, relocated, and turned into Scott’s Heritage Interpretive Center and serves as the area’s visitor and information center under the capable hands of Denise Begnaud Rogers. . Now most every Friday night sees musicians coming from as far as a hundred miles away to play Cajun waltzes, two steps, and old time country and Acadian music. . Denise saw me peeking in. We talked a minute, then she pulled me into the room. . “This is Road and he’s from Maine! He’s going to film what we do here Fridays.” . I was welcomed with open arms, heard tales about going to Maine for the big Acadian gathering that happens every five years. Talked to 81yr old Larry Miller who has made more than 1200 accordions and can be seen playing the mop-handled bottle cap stick at the right end of the crowd. He learned about it from musicians in New Brunswick. I was tapped on the shoulder and tugged at the elbow by folks who had this tale or that tidbit to share. . Very helpful was Jane Matte, who tried to give me each musicians name and a little history about them. . More French was spoken than English. There was food, there was laughter, and there was great local music being played. Musicians jammed away for three hours or more. . I was pulled up to dance twice and did my best. “Where you learn to dance Cajun? You did preddy good up der!” . Denise has arranged to host several Canadian musicians in a few months and invited me back. . Might just be one thing I don’t mind having as a concrete calendar entry. .
