2. How long was the process before this character reached its final version? (Or a version that would be clear and recognizable as the character)

For Nova !!!

Nova is complicated because she is the one who has changed the least from version to version but she is also the one who is still kind of up in the air the most? Her characterization is much easier to pin down than her design because she is sort of the focus. 

That's not so say the other characters aren't important! There's 3 (5) main protagonists but Nova is the gravity that holds them all together, she's the star they orbit I guess? So it's been a long process and alot of little tweeks to get her right.

5. How did you choose their name and why? 

For Idony!!

According to many baby name websites Idony means: to Love, again.

It's thematically appropriate for her considering what she goes through, and the fact that she will always find her way back to Nova no matter what happens. There's a lot of forces dead set on tearing them apart and that just won't happen. 

And then in universe Idony is kind of a seperate othering name. There's a level of social isolation attributed to being a dragon in a world of unicorns, that unlike Iris and Nova or even Karlin and Alistair, Idony doesn't quite sound/look like it fits ?

character asks: 1 for the calamity crew!

1. What was the original thought that led to the creation of the characters?

So they have actually been around for a very long time and it's kinda silly but I first made them because I thought I had to have ocs.

I was just starting out as an artist posting to Instagram and I drew my dnd characters alot but everyone else seemed to have original characters with original stories and so the thought behind it was just, oh ok I should also do that too?

From there I just took a collection of themes I liked and applied them to a sort of YA format. The original story followed the princess and her gaggle of friends venturing out into the wilds that surround the kingdom and fighting the moth monsters that lived there with sick ass light swords.

The whole thing was very TAZ/ the owl house at the time, with that sort of typical fantasy/tech dnd style setting. But it's changed a lot since, but you can still see a lot of those original themes that really just stuck in my brain.

Long ass way to say, I thought I had to so I looked at the stories that inspired me and just hit the ground running.
