Calder Hall, and sister station Chapelcross, provide an interesting counterexample to the claim frequently heard from those who oppose civil nuclear energy, that it leads to (or is only a front for) military nuclear activities.
These reactors were originally built to make plutonium for bombs, with electricity as a by-product. Britain in the 1950s was in a weak economic position, and throwing away a megawatt-day of heat for every gram of plutonium produced seemed foolish when it could be used to supplement coal supplies. Before long, however, they began to be operated primarily or exclusively for power (leaving the fuel elements in the reactor for much longer exposures, which reduces both the quality and quantity of plutonium obtained), and continued to be so operated for the remainder of their operating lives, which extended for more than 40 years.
