Washington's military family, circa 1776

The aides-de-camp: George Baylor, Samuel B. Webb, William Grayson, and Richard Cary. Also: Joseph Reed, adjutant general and advisor. Robert Hanson Harrison, military secretary, with Alexander Contee Hanson as his assistant. Washington's Guard and special aides: Capt. Caleb Gibbs and Lt. George Lewis.

I've been reading "George Washington's Indispensable Men" by Arthur S. Lefkowitz to learn more about the aides, especially the ones I'm not familiar with, and naturally I had to draw them. I enjoy visual aides and having a face to the name, and so I tried my best in finding references for my depictions of them. References are below the cut.

*Note: These references are primarily portraits and engravings. Their hair is typically powdered for portraits, and/or etched in black and white, so creative liberties were taken for their hair and eye colors. I tried to make educated guesses based on the lightness of their brows and irises (and based on portraits of family members). Feel free to correct me, and I apologize for any inaccuracies.

I referred to "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms From 1775– 1783 (The American Revolutionary War)" (pages 94-95) for his uniform and helmet. I took inspiration from @nerenight's rendition of Gibbs, and some consideration in this alleged image of Caleb Gibbs (original source unidentified; it is very unlikely to be Caleb Gibbs, take it with a pinch of salt). This same image was used here. George Lewis does not seem to have any portraits. I referred to the painted portraits (c. 1750-57 by John Wollaston) of his parents: Elizabeth "Betty" Washington Lewis and Fielding Lewis. Also, he is George Washington's nephew (and after whom Lewis is named), so GW was also considered in my depiction of Lewis.

Okay, so this is slightly cringe of me but I have been making this Actor AU for George Washington's office for abouth half a year now. And I kinda wanna talk about it because it consumes my every waking thought.

To clarify the acting au is that I made up fictional actors who would play the historical figures in some sort of adaptation of the revolutionary war. Most of them have names and personalities too that I made up.

So I will introduce all of you to the following people playing our favorite aide-de camps:

Alexander Hamilton as: Natalie Neumann, actress musician and queer icon, wrote a 36 page long psychological analisis on Hamilton to get the job and killed it.

John Laurens as: Stephen, Two times married 26 year old with a love for horror and the personality of a golden retriver, originally wasn't even in the top three choices for the role but the person they casted quit four weeks in and he spoke french.

Tench Tilghman as: Taylor, tired ex-nurse turned actor and everybody asks him about their medical problems instead of going to a doctor, he had to overwatch every single of Natalie's and Stephen's bullshit and also fluent in french.

Richard Kidder Meade as: Richard, his significant other (they/them) works for the Tax Man, originally was on the audio team because he is a voice actor but Natalie and him had so much fun figuring out the Hamilton voice that the director asked him to get an on-screen role.

Robert Hanson Harrison as: Reggie(Regulus), father of four but you could not tell, got arrested on set for breaking the arm of the murderous ex of their director.

John Fitzgerald as: Felix O'Connor, Singer is a curch choir with three parrots, got married during the shooting and told it to literally noone.

James McHenry as: Liam, got famous with a serious police drama role actually is a sweetheart, got hit in the face with at least three books on set.

Caleb Gibbs as: Ivan, was a croatian child actor before his family emigrated to the US, appeared on the infamous and hillarious pancake making advertisment program for the screen project where they got literally the two people on team who wasn't born in the states.

Joseph Reed: Noah, the phisically healthiest person with occasional emotional breakdowns, is the reason everybody has everyone's phone number because he got lost in the forest for three hours and could have died.

George Washington as: Benson Herrera, has the vibe of a father of four and shamelessly late from everywhere, got a 28 minute long video compalation of him titled "Benson Herrera getting screamed at by Italian women for 28 minutes and 36 seconds" and all the recordings are from this one project alone.

This was asked by nooen and I never done such a thing but here you go. I hope at least someone will apprechiate it because I could talk so much about them.

-This was the journey back to Valley Forge from Albany, where Hamilton may have first met Eliza. He certainly spoke with Philip Schuyler while he was there. Hamilton became severely ill on the return trip, as can be seen in the entries for November 22d through November 25th.

Has Hamilton ever been shot during the revolutionary war?

Not that any record survives of. Hamilton seemed pretty good at haphazardly dodging injuries or inevitable death. A few quotes to pick from secondary sources, Hamilton at Germantown;

Likewise mounted and in the forefront as usual, Hamilton also had a number of close calls, but escaped injury in the hard-fought battle.

Hamilton at Yorktown;

As additional elated Americans reached the parapet and began to open fire after having quickly loaded muskets that had been unloaded during the attack, the feisty defenders resisted for some time. Since he was in the charge’s forefront and the first inside, Hamilton was most fortunate to have escaped injury from not only the initial volley fired by the enemy at close range, but also the flurry of furious bayonet thrusts.

But again, these are secondary sources. Hamilton did have a tendency to be reckless through battle, and it's an honest shock he even managed to survive it. He marched straight into line of fire as Mulligan recalls, and at Yorktown too. I have recently heard of this story circling around where Caleb Gibbs supposedly saved Hamilton from a gunshot at Yorktown, [x] or Hamilton had accidentally shot him at the attack of Redoubt 10. [x] But I can't find any convincing evidence of this claim outside of Gibbs's ankle injury, that's cause isn't explained. [x] Although Tucker writes that Jeremiah Olney had allegedly saved Hamilton when the battle had become worse;

Now a completely exposed target atop the parapet, Captain Olney simultaneously dodged bayonet thrusts from half a dozen British soldiers. Fortunately, Hessian and British soldiers had no time to reload their Brown Bess muskets after unleashing their initial volley—a factor that almost certainly saved both Olney and Hamilton from injury or death.
