Baby, to the moon and back I'll still love you more than that (Moon and Back by Alice Kristiansen. Awesome song. My mom and I love it because she's always said she loves me to the moon and back.)
(First of all that’s adorable. Second of all angst warning ahead)
Leo did his best to be optimistic for the both of them. He got up early and did the chores Calypso hadn’t had the motivation to do the night before. When he had finished with that, he made breakfast though it was almost always burnt, and even then he cleaned up his mess. He set the table and made sure everything was perfect before going and waking her with a gentle smile and kiss on the cheek.
There were times she didn’t get out of bed and the breakfast was left to go cold despite Leo’s efforts. He never complained or grew upset. She didn’t need that, and he could only think of all the times she’d been patient with him. But it broke his heart a little bit to see her so sad and empty.
The death of their son wasn’t an easy thing to grasp. They’d been excited, jumped for joy, waited months to finally meet him, and then the news came that they never would. He’d never cried so hard in his life since the day his mother died. And that moment had hurt Calypso more than he could imagine. She rarely smiled now, and he knew why. She felt broken. Like it was her fault. He’d tried so hard to assure her that it wasn’t. That she couldn’t have done anything different.
But it was hard when all of your friend’s wives had children without a hitch. Not one of them could understand the pain, and though Leo was glad none of them did, it made him feel lonelier than he already was.
“You feel like getting up today?” Leo asked, as Calypso rubbed the sleep from her eyes only to nestle up closer to him and hide her face in his chest. He ran a hand through her hair and place a light kiss on the top of her head. “I made your favorite for breakfast.”
“Thank you,” came the muffled and soft reply.
“Of course,” Leo smiled faintly as she propped herself up into one elbow to give him a bleary eyed morning kiss. “Anything for the most beautiful girl in all the land.”
“Your flattery hasn’t changed at all over the years,” Calypso sighed, but there was a hint of a smile to her voice.
“I can work on it if you’d like. Only, you might see me standing in front of the mirror and talking to myself,” Leo joked, glad to see that she was in better spirits today. They were making progress though it was slow.
“You do that anyways. You’re Leo.”
“Bad boy supreme,” Leo smirked. Calypso rolled her eyes and took up her former position nestling back into his arms.
“I love you,” she muttered, yawning shortly after her words.
“Baby, to the moon and back,” Leo smiled gently, holding her tight, “and I’ll still love you more than that.”
“What’s after the moon?” Calypso asked.
“Not sure,” Leo admitted, “but that doesn’t matter because I love you more than all the way to Pluto and back.”
“How will I ever too such a feat?” Calypso replies sarcastically, earning a laugh from Leo that in turn made her smile. His heart nearly stopped as she looked at him. She hadn’t smiled in so long he nearly forgot how beautiful she looked when she did.
Though they never did make it out to breakfast before it went cold, Leo was okay with that. He’d seen Calypso smile and to him that was worth more than a million cold breakfasts.
