the air conditioning at my work broke and it's 105 degrees outside, so if any of you need me, I'll be standing on a table belting out "SOMEONE OUGHTA OOOOOOOOPEN UP A WINDOOOWWWW" until I collapse of heatstroke, have a blessed day
There’s rolling blackouts all over Northern California, but we are one of the lucky ones that have not been affected so far. Pg&e says that this is a preventative measure, since high winds and dry weather make a wildfire more likely.
But the thing is, they wouldn’t have to worry about contributing to a wildfire if they had maintained their power lines. But rather than investing in updating and maintaining infrastructure, they returned the profits to their investors. The result was a fire that caused billions of damage and killed 80 people.
Now they’re tied up in bankruptcy and litigation, and they can’t afford to cause another fire, nor can they afford to repair the power lines quickly, so instead they are just turning power off preemptively. My husband’s family is going to be without power for up to 7 days. And they will not even reimburse people for food and medication spoiled because they’re doing it for a “safety issue.” That they caused!
The whole thing is infuriating. Electricity is not a luxury in modern society, it’s a utility. It’s unbelievable that a private company can mismanage things so badly and still be left in charge of such a basic need. Even my republican, Trump-voting brother-in-law is wondering why there hasn’t been a government takeover of pg&e yet.
On a personal note, my husband offered to let his family stay with us while they have no power. But it turns out the thing they miss most is live television, an amenity we don’t have (purely Netflix and downloads over here). They said if it lasts much longer they are going to drive four hours in the opposite direction to Nevada . And my relief at not having my mother-in-law in my house for the next few days is real and palpable. But it also wouldn’t be necessary if the power company would just do its freakin job and actually provide power without lighting the hills on fire.
Just got a power-outage warning because of high winds, to avoid fallen lines causing wild fires...
I thought fire season was over!!
It's frickin OCTOBER!!!
Welcome to California where the only season we get is Fire Season
Ugh, I’m so pissed rn.
I JUST cleaned my room for my Halloween party on Thursday but now I might have to tear up my week's worth of work because of some “fire” that could “burn my house down” like ew.
That damn Healdsburg/Geyserville fire be blowing at us at like 70 mph. I know you don’t have the guts to come close, bitch. We might have to get out anyways.
You damn bastard flame, could you wait a week? Then I won’t care if my room’s cleaned or not. You ain’t my guest gtfo and stop trying to ruin my damn plans.
The sky is thick and dark with smoke, the world smells like a camp fire. Welcome to the hotel California. Such a lovely place...
