Setting Sail for Tomorrow (and whatever comes next)

Calli and Flynn sail off into the sunset following the events of Veil of Secrets, starting the next chapter of their lives together in Birchport.

In honor of the finale of our VOS book club, I thought it was time to share this. I am absolutely in love with this art by the one and only ArtbyAinna (Instgram).

I'm going to post these HCs separate after the finale but here they are here as well...

After the book...

*Flynn takes over as lighthouse keeper and works to make the docks and ports a more fair place with those doing the work getting livable wages and credit for their hard work. Grant helps handle any lawsuits that need to be settled to help clean up everything at the docks.

*Calli moves to Birchport and works for their local paper. She also starts a private investigation agency (like her cousin Lilah Rose). Flynn helps when he can. Kate really wants to be a detective, but she has yet to master the art of being subtle. Naomi is Calli's main partner at her private investigation agency.

Study Habits

A/N: I didn't really plan to write this, it sort of happened. So enjoy this quick look at Calli and Kate's time in college.

Synopsis: Midterms are next week and Kate hasn't begun to study. Luckily, Calli is there to help.

"Do we have to?" Kate groaned, throwing herself onto the narrow twin bed on her side of the dorm room.

"Our midterms are next week and you haven't even begun studying," Calli responded as she sat at her desk, trying to create a last-minute study calendar for them.

"Wait! You have?" Her cool blue eyes widened.

"Of course."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Calli's brow rose as her gaze flickered to her roommates. "I did. "

"Then, what did I say?" She pressed, folding her arms across her chest.

Calli's eyes brightened and her face became more animated as she did her best impression of Kate, "But Calliiii, studying is sooo boring and she has the most beautifullll green eyes... I mean, if you think about it, studying her is really studying color theory."

A smile pulled on Kate's features. "Okay, yeah. But you could have insisted." She pouted, pulling a unicorn plush into her arms as she sunk further into her mountain of pillows.

"Have you met yourself?" She laughed softly. "No one can change your mind, about anything."

"Ughhh, fine," she relented. "We can study tonight. But oh! Let's get a quick bite first. You know what they say about eating a good meal before working. I mean, I don't know what they say, but I'm pretty sure someone has said something."

Calli exhaled slowly, knowing all too well that getting something to eat would lead to a much longer adventure, one that didn't involve any studying. "What about pizza?"

"Pizza could work—"

"Great!" Calli cut her off before she could continue, dialing the number of a local place that delivered to campus as Kate continued.

"Oo, maybe Kyle will be working tonight. Do you think he and Amber worked things out yet? Either way, I guess I should change. Even if they have you know it'll end again by the weekend."

"No, that's it. Thank you." Calli finished her call and turned her attention back to Kate who was hurriedly sorting through clothes.

"Good news, pizza will be here in 20 so you can pause the wardrobe change."

Kate's face dropped. "So we're not going out?"

"Nope! If we cover the first chapter of psych tonight, we can hit two and three tomorrow."

"Did you at least get mac and cheese pizza?"

Her head dipped to the side. "Is that really a question?"

Kate's smile returned. "Fine, we can study and eat pizza, but I'm still changing. If I'm forced to study and not go out, I might as well do it in style."

"I'm almost nervous to ask what that actually entails."

Kate pursed her lips as she glanced around the room. "Perfect!" She grabbed two fluffy feather boas. She wrapped one around her neck tossing the end over her shoulder with a flourish before turning to Calli and adoring her with one as well.

The feathered accessory tickled her neck. It was less than conducive to studying, but she would endure it for Kate if it meant they could finally study. Besides, she knew she wouldn't have to wear it long. Once the pizza arrived, Kate was sure to have another idea, that had nothing to do with studying. Calli certainly had her work cut out for her.

Veil of Secrets: The Next Chapter

I wish my brain would cooperate so I could write this as a fic, but my writer's block is still being persistent so I'll just share what comes next as bullet points for now!

Callista Rossi

stays in Birchport with Flynn

writes the story of what happened in Birchport

continues as a journalist, writing for the local paper

keeps connections at her old paper in New York and submits high interest pieces to them still

opens a detective / private investigation agency in Birchport (she gets tips from her cousin Lilah Rose and her boss, Mafalda Ginovesi)

kept Agent Kim's contact information, but has yet to take the Bureau up on their offer

Flynn O'Malley

does NOT join the force

takes over as lighthouse keeper after Nikolai leaves

takes over managing the port and helps revitalize the area

helps those working the docks to get the wages and credit they deserve (working with Grant to support the people and causes of the docks)

Birchport Light Investigations

Calli's detective agency

She teased about naming it Mystery Incorporated or the Scooby Doo gang, but Grant reminded her that she might run into some copyright issues. She shrugs and tells him at least she knows a good lawyer!

Flynn helps on cases when he can, especially at night when Calli is running through ideas and theories. He listens and offers his thoughts. He loves seeing how invested she is in the community and that she doesn't see any cause as "too little".

Kate wants to be a detective, but she hasn't quite mastered the art of subtlety yet plus with the baby Calli feels it's not the right time. However, Kate insisted she make the agency's official cupcake flavor: lemon (for light) - blueberry (for the sea) cupcake with vanilla frosting with gold dust and a white chocolate lighthouse

Naomi helps quite a bit when she is off duty and sometimes when she is on duty (🤫 ). She and Calli grow very close through the cases.

Grant doesn't have a lot of time to help, but he offers legal services to Calli for anything she needs to help

Kate O'Malley

opens her bakery

asks Flynn and Calli to be Rachel's godparents

is insanely excited to have Calli as a sister (in law) but teases Calli about that time they made out in college and says they can't do that anymore

turns Sterling Manor into the Birchport Community Retreat, which includes a community garden, a library/reading room, a museum of Birchport wing with the full history of the town on display, a art wing with all the Sterling's pieces on display for the public.

When Miss Harlenay comes back, Kate offers a part of the manor as a bed and breakfast for anyone holding events on the property.

The government seizes a lot of the Sterling's finances, but with what's left over she keeps a modest amount for her daughter and donates the rest to the workers at the docks who's back the town was built on.

Naomi Silverhawk

becomes Chief of Police and cleans up the department

she creates community outreach programs

works closely with Calli at her investigation agency

works closely with DCFS (department children and family services) to make sure the welfare of all children is being monitored and addressed

Grant Emerson

makes Birchport a fair, safe, and enjoyable place to live

helps ensure the true history of Birchport is told + works with Kate to organize the museum piece of the Community Retreat

takes on any cases related to the fall out of the Sterlings and made sure anyone who was mistreated or held back by the Sterlings, got what they deserved

wins the State Senator seat

Flynn teases him that the White House is next but Grant isn't quite ready for that

Fight: especially when a story or mystery is on the line, she is determined is going to go head first into a problem.

She and Lilah (COP MC) used to have a little detective agency as kids. Inspired by Mary Kate and Ashley's mysteries. They went after any silly little case that popped up in their heads as they played together at family trips and gatherings. This wasn't always the safest choice. Sometimes their curiosity sent them after people that valued their privacy, but they learned from it and got better at stealth and reading people to help protect them.

🐺 - How does this oc deal with solitude?

Calli is okay with some solitude. She enjoys being with friends and family, but she also enjoys solitude. It let's her dive into her stories and "cases". She loves being able to spend hours researching and making connections between clues, diving further into the mystery. Sometimes she needs someone to pull her back and help her remember to eat, drink water, and take a break.

🌱 - Share one of this oc’s early memories.

Investigating the case of the missing stuffed animal in Kindergarten. She drew pictures in your journal of all her "clues" and a map of her classroom. Eventually she found the missing bear! One of the kids brought it to the nurse with them for support and left it here.

Fox 🦊 —they're intelligent, curious, and resourceful (and they're also very cute!)

I know I said I was making Francesca Chillemi the FC for Calli's sister, but.... it seems really silly since Olivia (Calli's FC) has 4 siblings... I could just use one of her actual sisters and then there might be pictures of them....

I'm thinking of switching Arianna's FC to Aurora Culpo and then making Calli's younger brother's FC Gus Culpo (Olivia's younger brother).
