Summary:
As Sherlock nears the end of his career, he's given the gift of a cottage in Sussex. The honey from the beehives out back is amazing.
Rec: This fic is magical. Utterly, absolutely perfect. I was immediately drawn in and enchanted by the setting, the characters, and the beautiful imagery, and kept there by the dual mystery of the cottage and the deeper tangle of the interpersonal relationships. John and Sherlock’s friendship is the core of this, their unshakeable bond, now stronger than ever, even though they are not “like that” (although I hope it’s not exactly a spoiler to point out the / in the relationship tag along with slow burn and happy ending). But also Mycroft and Sherlock’s complicated filial history and John and Rosie’s stilted relationship are treated with exquisitely understated care. It’s all the things that go unspoken, as ever, that mean so much.
One other thing I appreciated about this fic is that it is set 20 years in the future, and feels like it. So often in retirement fic, only the ages of the characters change, but they still seem to be living in the current year. Here, the characters are realistically aged, the technology is plausibly advanced, and there are even nicely casual suggestions of social, political, and economic changes that have taken place.
I’ll admit that I was a bit wary of the magical realism bit going in, but -- trying not to be spoilery -- if that’s not your thing then really, you needn’t worry, there is no physical-law-defying supernaturalness. It can easily be read through the filter of “that which we cannot explain with our current knowledge”. At the same time, if it is your thing, then I think you’ll be charmed.
