The first place I saw Callie Thorne was Homicide: Life on The Streets. Now, HLOTs had been on four seasons already and I loved it dearly. Up until the 4th season, the only woman in the squad room had been Melissa Leo and she was a force.
In the 4th season Toni Lewis started wandering in and out of the room. Her Terri Stivers was a detective on loan who eventually transferred. And coroner Julianna Cox (Michelle Forbes) roared into town and it was almost even steven. Then Det. Laura Ballard (Thorne) showed up and paired with the weaker link, Gharty, both she and Thorne had to prove themselves.
She's taken what I assume are ballsy roles since, as both The Wire and Rescue Me are considered darker, edgy shows. I really need to catch up both. This year she got a new job on Necessary Roughness on the USA network. It's her show, she's Dani Santino, a newly minted therapist whose marriage of 17 years is in ruins.
She's sure the personal can't get fixed and gets a nice boost on the professional side when she is chosen by the New York Hawks football team to try and get their troubled wide receiver Terrance King on the right path. He's not her only client though, plus she has to deal with her teenagers' reaction to the divorce.
Al of this came to a head in tonight's season finale. With the playoffs and having to face his nemesis looming, Terrance was having panic attacks. The kids found out she signed the divorce papers and finally realized what that was going to mean for their futures. Even stoic ninja Nico needed help this week.
Nico proved the easiest to help. Terrance looked like he might falter, but he pulled off a surprise play and it looked like he was going to be able to salvage his new, adult relationship. Even Dani looked like she was going to get some when she finally gave in to the advances of trainer Matt Donnally, the oh-so-lovely Marc Blucas.
It looked as though everything was going to get wrapped up in a neat, tidy and very pretty bow. As though it might have been a series finale. Even I forgot the show was renewed. So the twist actually surprised me. (Spoilers ahead)
While in a club, celebrating the team's victory, Terrance was confronted by an angry Chicago fan (the other team in the playoffs) and while it took a while a few exchanges for him to shut the fan down, he eventually did. However, the fan's reaction involved a concealed weapon and Nico having to interrupt Dani and Matt's night. All in like the last 5 to 8 minutes. Way to keep it interesting people!
