Kenya Plans to Become a Competitor in International Creative Industry
Kenya has recently launched an extensive plan to capture a piece of the international creative arts industry. The government made the announcement today that, through the Ministry of Information and Communications, they will form a taskforce to examine how Kenya can use local talent to make a name for themselves in the creative media world.
Dr. Bitange Ndemo, Kenya’s information PS, believes that Kenya needs to launch this initiative in order to stay relevant in a world of knowledge-based economies. They will focus on a growth in visual effects, information technology, animation, film, and music.
The taskforce includes chairman of the Kenya ITC Consumers Association Alex Gakuru and Michael Onyango, and animator among many others. Their main concern is the growth in exposure of local content, as they already have the infrastructure and regulations in place to tap into the lucrative creative media sector, but lack a sufficient amount of locally-produced content. Because of this, Ndemo said that the government is considering implementing a rule that states that broadcasters have to have at least 40 percent local content. Ndemo also said that Indian investors had already shown interest in investing in e-learning centers which would benefit Kenyan’s greatly.
Yvonne Muinde, a successful Kenya digital artist who worked on the groundbreaking film Avatar, expressed her enthusiasm in the plan. She believes that if Kenyans are taught the basic skills, they can begin to produce works that rival those around the world, and that many talented local visual artists could be extremely successful internationally if given the right exposure.
