Calling Spirits: Chapter one, Childs Laughter
Logan groaned at even the idea of what Virgil was claiming, even the thought of the woods behind their apartment was haunted. It was an idiotic idea! They were just rumors from people who stumbled into them drunk or high, but Virgil kept insisting that he was real.
“I’m telling you Lo! The woods are haunted! And we are exploring them tonight!” Virgil exclaimed as Logan's expression showed his thoughts clearly.
“First off, are you insane? Second, when was it ‘we’?” He questioned, astonished that Virgil would even think that he would agree to such an insane, no, horrific idea. Virgil rolled his eyes as he grabbed a bag packing it for what was seemingly a forced field trip onto the two.
“No, I am not insane. And it was we when you started watching conspiracy theories with me.” Logan groaned at the response, he didn’t mean to have what Virgil calls “Conspiracy Tuesday”. It just ended up happening more and more often as Logan was baffled at the astonishing claims made in the videos and then the either surprisingly convincing evidence or the idiotic lack of logic in the videos. They ended up making it a weekly thing to get Logan away from his studies and distract them from the responsibilities of the week, and from Logan could tell it helped the two roommates grow closer together.
“Of course… When are we going?” Sighing Logan knew he wasn’t getting out of this so why would he bother arguing even more? Watching Virgil move room to room grabbing multiple necessities for what is seemingly to be a night hunt of who knows how long, if there was one thing Logan could count on with Virgil, is that when it came to these things Virgil didn’t forget a single thing. From flashlights with extra batteries, walkie-talkies also with extra batteries if seperated, extra hoodies, first aid kits, snacks and foods to eat, and so on. Virgil always over thought things just as Logan to which they had a plan for almost everything.
“As soon as we can!” Virgil exclaimed as he finished packing the now stuffed backpack as he threw on his signature jacket looking to Logan who slipped on a sleek black jacket then adjusting his glasses.
“Well then let’s get going.” Logan sighed as Virgil dragged him out of the door and out to the back of the apartments, The sun setting around them a smile slowly crossed Virgil’s lips, it was their chance to see if cryptids exist.
“What are you all doing?” A voice spoke up from behind them as Virgil jumped from not expecting it, as Logan looked behind him to see their neighbor, Janus.
“Ah Janus, Virgil is dragging me into the woods because he believes it’s haunted.” Logan bluntly stated as Janus smirked nodding to the idea.
“Sounds oooh so fun.” He stated sarcastically then walked in front of them, “Well? Let’s see if Virgies little ghost’s exist.” “I told you don’t call me ‘Virgie’! That nickname was from when we were like, 5!” Virgil groaned as they walked into the woods.
The woods were thick, as Virgil turned on a flashlight leading the way, handing the other flashlight to Logan while Janus used the flash light on his phone. Even though it was getting dark the woods had little to no light to them as they actively tried to keep together while maneuvering the woods that surrounded them. Right before he could strike up a conversation Logan froze, looking off in the distance, Virgil quickly realizing this stopped as well.
“Logan..?” He murmured before looking over to see what he was looking at and freezing as well. This, this couldn’t be real right? There was no way they just found this, hesitantly approaching Virgil scanned over what he was worried about. A small figure layed on the ground shivering, their clothes covered with faint splotches of red and large clumps of brown. He could obviously recognize this as a child, why were they left here?! Gesturing for Logan and Janus to come over they could see better the condition the child was in. There was no major injuries, although all the scratch marks and small cuts could be dangerous for how long they could’ve been out here.
Without wasting a second Janus put his phone up carefully grabbing the child picking them up to which cause the frail figure to squirm and wince as Janus quietly shushed them and held the child carefully. “We need to take this kid back to the apartment now.” Janus’ normally laid back and sarcastic demeanor was replaced with one of urgency and leadership. Nodding simultaneously they rushed back to the building not noticing the faint glow behind them staring at them so intensely.
“What do we do with this kid?” Virgil exclaimed once in Janus’ apartment, Janus rolled his eyes as he set the child on the couch who tiredly rubbed her eyes looking around at the people that stood in front of them. Her expression was confused but not scared.
“Hey there, my name’s Janus what’s yours?” Janus whispered quietly as the kid tilted their head.
“Name…? Uh, I think it’s Lilac…” She murmured quietly, leaning against the seat Lilac closed her eyes once more. A faint glow to her skin, the small wounds slowly faded away as she smiled slightly stretching from her spot. “Yeah… My name is Lilac!”
They stared at the child in disbelief, if they knew anything this child was definitely not human. A smile crossing their lips Virgil started to laugh. “I KNEW IT! CRYPTIDS EXIST! oH GOD CRYPTIDS EXIST-” The short euphoria became panic, as a smile crossed Lilacs lips as she laughed quietly slowly becoming louder as a golden glow filled the room as she slowly stopped laughing a blue glow behind her appeared, as she looked behind her a larger smile forming.
“Hi!”
