Boyle Heights roadside is cleaner after teen adopts a highway

Boyle Heights -- Seventeen-year-old Jimmy Rodriguez wanted to give back to his community. So, he decided to volunteer to clean a freeway roadside near his home.

If you’ve ever been in LA and tried to get from the 110 onto the 5, you probably know how difficult that is because the signs for that interchange are small, off to the side of the road, and hidden by trees so you only see them as you’re whizzing past on your way to Pasadena.

This dude took it upon himself to fix the problem. He researched the standards for freeway signage and built an interchange sign. Then--get this--he gets himself a haircut, sews himself a CALTRAN worker uniform, and installs his edit on the actual freeway sign.

Since then, CALTRAN has “fixed” the sign as part of their regular maintenance, and included his edits.
