Parliament-Funkadelic Co-founder Calvin Simon Dies at 79
Singer Calvin Simon, a member of George Clinton’s pre-funk Parliaments and co-founder of Parliament-Funkadelic, died Jan. 6.
Bootsy Collins announced Simon’s death on social media - calling him “a friend, bandmate and a cool, classic guy” - without mentioning a cause.
Simon was 79.
The vocalist is one of 15 Parliament/Funkadelic members inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. His work with Clinton stretched from the late-1950s to 1978. Simon eventually formed the spinoff bands Funkadelic and Original P.
He briefly rejoined Clinton in the P-Funk Allstars in the 1990s before making the gospel albums Share the News in 2004 and It’s Not too Late in 2016.
“Rest in peace to my P-Funk brother, Mr. Calvin Simon. … Fly on, Calvin,” Clinton said.

Remembering Calvin Simon 1942-2022
Parliament-Funkadelic co-founder Calvin Simon has died at 79. People have no idea just how influential P-Funk were. George Clinton’s group Parliament had Simon singing lead vocals and occasionally sang with Funkadelic, which was happening parallel to Parliament. He left P-Funk in 1977. Parliament’s Greatest Hits is in my CD collection! That’s Simon singing on “Give Up the Funk”!
