BIKANER -- Camel Country
Bikaner, a royal city in the northern region of Rajasthan is known for number of things ranging from sweets and snacks to forts and palaces that still displays its ancient opulence. From its small origins, it has developed into the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. Though the place was founded by Rao Bika in 1486, the city still celebrate its foundation day on Akshaya Tritiya by flying kites and eating special Rajasthani food that includes Bajre ka Khichda and Imli ka Pani among other snacks. The foundation day celebration lasts for two days i.e. Chhoti Akha Teej and Badi Akha Teej and people can be seen flying kites during these two days. The city is known as the Camel Country because it boasts of some of the world.s best rising camels and also home to one of the world’s largest Camel research and breeding farms. It is also being known for having its own unique temple dedi aged to Karni Mata at Deshon, called the Rats Temple.
The major attractions of this place are Junagarh fort, Lallgarh Palace, Kote gate and Gajner Palace. Also, when it comes to food in Bikaner, this city wins the heart by providing it's spicy mouth watery dishes. Some of the popular ones are the much loved Bikaneri Bhujia, Aloo Bhujias, Sattus prepared by mixing water, jaggery, nuts and barley, Dal Bati Churma, Gatta ki Sabzi and Pakodi and delicious super soft Rasgullas among other things. To pamper the tastebuds the city have some mouthwatery Rasmalai and Kesar chamm cham.
Again, the city win the hearts by its handicrafts and leather articles. Shopping in Bikaner is all about buying the famous leather products made from camel hide including delicately embroidered ‘mojris’, camel and sheep wool carpets, lacquer work and other handicrafts. The intricately carved Jharokas are also quite famous. These red sandstone stone jalis are found on the windows of the Junagarh fort, temples and havelis. With the largest Camel Research and Breeding farms in Asia, the city offers the best camel rides and is known for its camel research farm (NRCC).
The majestic forts and palaces, vibrant local markets, beautiful handicraft items and delicious street food make Bikaner a must visit city in Rajasthan.
