Book diary: “The Incoming Tide” by Cameron Pierce

I love the concept and design of this book: it’s a tiny, perfectly-proportioned miniature. The cover is gorgeous. Each story is a page or two long. It’s a pleasure to read all around.

But what’s in it? There are stories about fishing, anecdotes of snakes, coasts and lakes, poetry I don’t hate, small musings. Mostly fishing. Combined, these tiny pieces somehow have the effect of being more autobiographical than even a memoir. Of course I don’t know what parts of it are fictional--I don’t know the author (he exists for me in that strange limbo of writers I admire who I have “friended” on facebook, creating a strange little window into their world--which, the more I think about it, the weirder it seems) but, from what I can tell, most of it seems to be true. And even if it isn’t, it has the feeling of being more real than truth, a feeling which I attribute to Pierce’s great, clear style, which is earnest without being over-serious (which totally kills this type of writing for me), and has evolved from his earlier fiction in a way I really like: it’s another kind of strange window, onto an entire life. I’ve hardly ever seen a book so small that paints such a great picture.
