hey! I'm in the FL net and I'm currently writing my first fic with a couple of friends. Its a Harry Potter bandom au with ryden and side peterick & frerard. I was wondering if you could give me advice on how you go your fic to be so popular? I'm worried that I'll put in a lot of effort and then no one will read it. thank you, have a great day <3

Oh, man, I think I just got lucky. I can’t believe how much interest and love Filthy Lucre has got myself and when I started writing it, I never even dreamed it would end up being this well-received. 

I think what makes a popular fic is:

A popular pairing. I could sit and write Jon/Joe smut all day (!!!) but there is a much smaller market for that than say Ryden, Frerard etc. Seems like you have that covered though!

Correct layout. When I see a fic that just has huge blocks of text, it puts me off and usually I won’t even finish it because it’s off-putting. Same if a fic has uneven spacing between paragraphs. Maybe that’s just me, but I think it’s better when a story layout is pretty uniform.

Good spelling and grammar. I have a super talented beta who goes over everything for me before I post it, because no matter how good you think you might be at the whole spelling/grammar thing, there’s always going to be little things you don’t catch and having a fresh pair of eyes to read over it really helps and also, when a fic isn’t filled with spelling mistakes it says: “I’m not lazy, I care!”

Uhh... smut? Again, maybe that’s just personal preference and I’m not saying every story has to have smut, but it seems the more popular fics in bandom are all pretty X-Rated.  

A interesting story with believable characters. Write the story you’d want to read, chances are there’s other people who want to read the same thing as you and if you put time and effort into it I think it tends to show :)

A lot of writers gain confidence from hearing feedback on what they write, which is why I think it’s so important to just leave a kudos or a quick comment to let them know you’re enjoying what they write! It can make or break an author so y’all: show your fanfic writers some love - a comment saying “good job, i like this story!” takes two seconds and literally can make someones day.

Also, (whispers) I totally promote that shit on Tumblr without shame but, you know what? Not everyone’s going to be interested in what you write and that doesn’t matter. Whether you’re writing for one person or one thousand, if you enjoy doing it and writing makes you happy/lets you escape real life/calms you down/whatever, I think it’s worth it and finishing a story is a huge personal achievement. Writing with friends is super fun too! You’ll have a blast doing it!
