There was a television in the dark room. One of those new compact boxes with broad screens that probably broadcast in colour. Every storefront in West Berlin seemed to boast one, and whilst they were the height of modern tech, they were a damn headache.
Bell had been lingering in the doorway, one shoulder propped up against the frame as he surveyed the developing prints in the soothing red glow; it would be that hypnotic light he would later settle on as an explanation.
Flickering light in his peripheral caught his attention first; the low rustle of static was almost imperceptible. That little screen had burst to life though no sooner had Bell turned his head had the picture snapped to black with a staticky hiss.
Perhaps it was a trick of the light. Regardless, Bell had no intentions of sticking around to replicate the experiment - not with the way his heart had leapt unpleasantly up his throat and the pervasive sense of unease that had settled thick in the air like smog.
He turned swiftly on his heel and strode back into the sharp light of the safe house, raising a hand to shield his eyes as they adjusted, practically stumbling into Adler. Never too far away, was he?
“You need a fucking hobby.” Bell muttered, side stepping the obstruction.
