LESTER HOLT: “Good morning. October surprise: a new tape of Osama bin Laden unexpectedly surfaces days before the election. Now the Bush and Kerry campaigns are accusing each other of using the tape and the ‘war on terror’ to gain political advantage today, Saturday, October 30, 2004.”

Weekend Today covered the bin Laden message during the final weekend ahead of the 2004 presidential election, twenty years ago this morning. Bush and Kerry campaign advisors commented in the political implications of the tape. NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell reported on Kerry’s reaction to the message. Amy Robach anchored the hourly newscast.

Elsewhere that morning, Wall Street Journal political editor John Harwood reviewed the electoral map with Weekend Today anchor Lester Holt. And fire chief Bob DiPoli told weatherman Sean McLaughlin about the importance of changing smoke detector batteries twice a year (typically around the time clocks switch back-and-forth for Daylight Saving Time).

CAMPBELL BROWN: “Good morning. Feeling the full force of Frances. The hurricane finally makes landfall in Florida and is currently pounding the Sunshine State with 95-mile-per-hour winds and lots of rain today, Sunday, September 5, 2004.”

The landfall of Frances was Today’s lead story twenty years ago this morning. Anchors Campbell Brown and Lester Holt brought viewers up to speed from New York. Weekend Today weatherman Sean McLaughlin put Frances in the context of the national forecast. And FEMA Director Mike Brown, just a year away from his disgraced exit from federal government, discussed the agency’s relief efforts.

Four NBC correspondents provided accounts from inside the storm, which was still slowly pushing across the Florida peninsula. Al Roker was in West Palm Beach, Martin Savidge was in Melbourne, and Brian Williams and Robert Hager were in Vero Beach.

MATT LAUER: “Good morning. Breaking news: the U.S. hands over sovereignty to Iraq two days early, in a surprise move today, Monday, June 28, 2004.”

The U.S. handover was the top story on Today twenty years ago this morning. NBC foreign correspondent Richard Engel and Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw reported from Baghdad. President Bush and British Prime Minister were recorded shaking hands when news of the transfer came during a NATO summit.

Elsewhere on the program, weatherman Al Roker was in Los Angeles to mark the 40th anniversary of Universal Studios Theme Park. Kirsten Dunst discussed her role in Spider-Man 2. Gloria Estefan announced her final concert tour. And Andrew Morton talked about his new book about Princess Diana.

Katie Couric was on assignment that morning. Weekend Today anchor Campbell Brown filled in for her. Newscaster Ann Curry was off, and Natalie Morales delivered Today’s hourly news updates.
