Disch Panther / Granada Books (1977) Camp Concentration was released when Disch was only 28 years old. It tells a remarkable story of prisoners who are given a drug that bestows on them super-intelligence with the caveat that they only have a year left to live after consuming the drug. This, in my opinion, is one of the most well-written stories in science fiction. Written at the height of the US involvement in Vietnam and in the aftermath of CIA experiments with LSD on unknowing subjects, Disch’s novel is a hornet’s nest of vicious stings. But what a prison!
