Social Media Submission: Leaving Utah - Entering Salt Lake City
I know it sounds like a really confusing title but it is true. I have lived in Northern Utah (and I mean almost to the border of Idaho) my whole life. I’ve grown up in small towns that fit one culture ideal that is entirely different than the one identified myself by. From a young age I wanted out, I wanted to find diversity in people, religions, cultures, etc. Well I finally did make it “out”...kinda. I moved to Salt Lake City.
These are some of the main reasons why Salt Lake City is it’s own little island in the bubble that is Utah culture.
The Landscape
I’m not talking about the mountains or the snow, I’m talking about the city itself. Salt Lake is a city, a small one, but still a city and with it comes a different flair than you will see in the traditional business in smaller towns.
Just last week I went to get Turkish Doner Kebabs at a restaurant downtown named Spitz. Of all thing, Turkish Kebabs...in Utah.
Salt Lake also has a plethora of incredible bars and pubs, again something you would not run into if you left the “island” of Salt Lake. My favorite is the Campfire Lounge, that allows you to have the pleasure of getting tipsy by a fire, Hobo dinners and all, without sacrificing yourself to mosquitos.
The music scene is incredible here as well and we get our fair share of amazing artists. We a ton of incredible artists touring through our small little city in amazing venues. Some of the best music venues are listed right here.
The Culture
When compared to the rest of the state, Salt Lake is incredibly diversified. Although it may not be the ideal “Salad” of diversity, the culture that has been cultivated here is astonishing.
As described earlier, the restaurants that have bloomed in salt lake brought by the culture that has arisen, is astonishing. Vietnamese, Mongolian, amazing Mexican and even Ethiopian cuisine can be found anywhere in the city. Mahider is one of my favorite restaurants to really soak in amazing and authentic food. You will not find any silverware here either, so be prepared.
Recently you cannot describe Salt Lake without is growing LGBTQ scene. Salt Lake hosts a large community of individuals that identify themselves in this genre and it happily contrasts with the religious ideals that you see when stepping outside of the city limits.
And of course that University of Utah hosts so many people from around the world for it’s amazing programs and world renowned innovations.
Which brings us to the people that can be found in Salt Lake.
The People
People travel here from all over the world, mostly for our amazing snow and ski slopes. (Brighton Ski Resort is my go to location)
But we have so much more to offer, which keeps people excited to move to this beautiful state and incredible city, adding to the cultural aspect and the amazing diversity.
Yes, I didn’t move out of Utah, but really it doesn’t matter because I feel like I’m in a thriving, growing and exciting city, which Salt Lake is. Utah offers so much in beauty and history and Salt Lake offers just that much more.
