The sounds of frantic footsteps were heard through the thick silent air of downtown.
It was late in the day, and most people were home now, or at least heading there. But this particular woman wasn’t sure where she was going.
Her breathing was rigid as she held a bundle of something close to her chest and continued to sprint down the damp sidewalk and eventually duck into a nearby alley.
Her chest was practically heaving at this point, and as she glanced around the corner to check for something, her eyes immediately widened and filled with fearful tears as she heard sounds of others trailing after.
“O-oh god.”
Her voice trembled. Hands shaking a bit as she looked around the dark alley for something to use. Something she could do... Somewhere to hide.
Alas, there didn’t seem to be anything around.
But she couldn’t stay here, those brutes were after her.. She saw too much.
She let out another shaky breath at that, and after a moment of panicked thinking, she could hear the footsteps growing closer. So without a word, she pulled the bundle away from her chest and looked down at it.
A confused little boy, about the age of one or two sat in her arms, staring right back at her. And for a moment, they both shared a silent conversation. The woman pressing her forehead against his and baring her teeth, before she finally pried him away from herself and quickly went to run over to the nearby dumpster, slipping him in quickly and carefully and whispering that she’d be back, she’d come back and get him.
The little boy’s eyes began to tear up, clearly not understanding what was happening. And as his mother left him, he started to cry for her, reaching tiny hands up after her as she faded from his view and began to run out of the alley and head off again.
There was another few sounds of footsteps and men yelling afterwards, and then a few gunshots and screaming was heard before it fell silent.
Now, the only thing that could be heard was the sound of light traffic, and a distant car alarm in the background.... And the sound of a little boy crying for his mother.

✎ = speaking in a different language . + ✏ = teaching them a different language .
quite honestly, david never really thought he’d find himself learning a second language. sure, he’d gone through a few required classes back in elementary school- but that never stuck in his head. and yet here he was, listening to daniel as he attempted to teach david a new language- speaking a tongue he had rarely heard and honestly wasn’t sure he would ever come tounderstand. perhaps a word or two would stick in his head- but right now he was struggling to even properly repeat the foreign words. tongue seeming to almost take on a mind of its own. “ mi – mi gnome-b – nawm – mi nombre es . . david ? “
face taking on a pinkish-reddish hue as he glanced away, embarrassed by how terribly he already seemed to be doing. this is why he only went through english during school. his gaze found it’s way back to daniel with a sheepish smile- a little flustered from his ownverbal mess. you’d think somebody who could sing so quickly would be able to say a short sentence in another language. “ sorry , “ an almost awkward laugh. “ i’m not too good at this , huh ? “
there was more than just a hint of disgust, but somehow the other MANAGED to conceal a full of scoff. that accent would be gnawing at his brain for a very long time before he got used to it, but never the less he was here and he was actually doing this. may the lord help him. forcing his expression to soften, daniel forced out a gentle smile, exhaling a tad as david had finished .. what was a bad attempt at saying what his name was.
a quiet laugh, “ weeell.. let’s see— you may wanna try making the sounds the words make before actually attempting to say the words themselves... if that makes any sense ? “ head tilt as his eyes focused on the other, “ try not to annunciation ever letter so much, spanish is a far lighter sound than you’re used to with english, david. words like ’ nombre ‘ are supposed to flow off the tongue, you see. “ the counselor quietly chuckled as he gave his peer a soft pat on the back, “ en todo.. eso fue un poco malo.. pero con practica, podrías hablar muy, muy bien. “

“ hey david—— “ there was a slight cut off as the man stopped to ponder how to approach such a thing. it was an odd question and an odd subject matter even for someone like a ‘ former ‘ cultist.
“ now that we have some time to ourselves and i got all settled in and such.. i feel pushed to ask: why were you so understanding ? i’m here now, i’m here doing the job i was ‘ meant ‘ to do all my life.. you’re incredibly kind to me david, and that.. well that baffles me. “ he intertwined his fingers together, staring at the other with a genuinely puzzled look.
