I found a scoliid wasp digging in the soil. Then, a few tens of seconds later, a beetle grub popped out of the ground! Scoliid wasps are parasitoids of beetle larvae. They paralyze the grubs and lay an egg on them, which the wasp larva later feed on. I think this grub managed to run away from the wasp.

One of the only members of the family #Scoliidae in the eastern US, this is #Campsomeris plumipes. This family is a close relative to the tiphiids and their distinctions are still not entirely clear. The scoliids include one of the largest wasps, Megascolia procer, which parasitizes the similarly massive Atlas beetle. Scoliids are parasitoids of scarab beetles and find biocontrol value in part in the control of the invasive and destructive Japanese beetle. #Hymenoptera #insectcollection #wasp
