Intramural Sports at Texas State
By: Alicia Almendariz February 21, 2019
The Student Recreation Center offers several sports and activities where students can pay a small fee and participate.Intramural sports, a semester long program, offers a variety of sports and activities that students can sign up, pay a fee and participate.
There is no limitation on the amount of activities a student can participate during the entirety of the season.
“I’ve done softball, I’ve done football, I’ve done basketball,” said Family and Child Development major Zach Streaty. Many students see intramurals as an opportunity to continue their love for a sport while in college. For example, students can stay involved in basketball, softball and extreme dodge ball. For gamers, there are leagues in x-box.
Former high school athletes use intramurals as an opportunity to continue playing sports without trying out for Texas State teams.
“Leaving high school, always still trying to play sports, you know, having to hang up the dream,” said Seth Pustejovsky, a Construction Science major.
Students who participate say intramurals provide a healthy way to exercise and an opportunity to build new friendships. “You can get a group of friends together and just come out and play once a week,” said Psychology major Dylan Nelson.
There are no skills or extra requirements to participate in any intramural activities other than a small fee of $10-$50. For more information on intramural sports, log on to www.campusrecreation.txstate.edu/intramurals.
It’s Play Time at Campus Rec
By Parker Rhea Nov. 14, 2018
The Texas State Recreation Center is a great place to let off some steam. The Student Rec Center welcomes all students.
“There’s a good atmosphere for sure. Especially cause it’s all our age group so you don’t feel weird or anything like that,” Texas State Senior Caleb Marlar said.
The Rec Center is not just for working out.
“There’s a lot of stuff. When I’m here I’ll mostly go shoot some then go workout or something like that,” Marlar added.
Groups from off campus can use the center for their activities too.
“We host gymnastics here. We host the UCA cheer camp that takes place here over the summer,” Facilities Manager Rachel Wetherford said.
The Center has some unique features not offered at most gyms.
“We have an indoor lap pool that most people don’t know about,” Wetherford added. “It is open to just about anybody. We have a golf simulator that is like Top Golf minus the alcohol and open area. Most people just see the weight room and track and forget about the other stuff we have to offer.”
Students can use the Rec for free with their ID.
