My journey to WSL (Part 1)
I first encountered women’s professional football when I was studying at Portsmouth University in 2002. England played Portugal in front of 8,821 spectators. I was interested in seeing how good the team was and very excited to have an opportunity to see an international match so locally and at such an affordable price (£10, I think it was).
What I discovered was a very welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The football was good too. The stand-out players for me were Kelly Smith with her movement and skill on the ball, and the defence-minded Katie Chapman who commanded her area of the pitch.
After that, years passed. I caught bits of coverage on TV but didn’t actively follow the teams whether international or the club sides. Then, the 2015 world cup happened. This time I was more than ready, and I was excited to see the best in the world in action. It didn’t disappoint.
There were stars such as the talismanic Marta of Brazil, the tricks from Lady Andrade of Columbia and the goal scoring instincts of Sasic for Germany. The French were a delight to watch with plenty of talent and the blistering pace of Thomis. I enjoyed the tidy approach-play of Japan and loved the determination of the hosts Canada epitomised by Chapman in defence, Matheson in midfield and Sinclair in attack. As for England, what a great group of players! Houghton led from the back, Jill Scott, Nobbs and Potter ran everywhere, and there were many options in every department, plus the brilliant Bronze announced herself to the world. They did so well to get to the semis and then finishing third. But the eventual winners absolutely deserved the trophy.
The USA had such a winning mentality and so many big characters. Their entire squad was full of quality and Solo, Rapinoe, Morgan, Lloyd and Wambach were world-class. What a World Cup final performance by Lloyd, writing the textbook version of ‘big-game player’ after scoring a sensational hat trick.
After that I was a fan. I wanted to see more.
