I read way too much heated rivalry fanfic, and I can always tell when an author is Canadian.
Now it’s fanfic, and it doesn’t really matter, but there’s a few key words that always take me out for a second because they’re very not Canadian.
So here is a short list of Canadianism that might help when writing HR fanfics!
We say “washroom” (which is the truly Canadian word) or “bathroom”. We do NOT say “restroom” (this is so silly but it bothers me lol)
We say “pop” not “soda”, if Shane is talking about ginger ale being his favourite drink, it’s POP!
“Runners” for running shoes
“Toque” (I feel like more people know this one, but it’s a winter hat)
Not so much a slang, but I haven’t seen any fics take advantage of the fact that the Canadian one dollar coin has a loon on it, and is called a loonie. ( also i do think that Ilya would make fun of the fact that the two dollar coin is called a “toonie”😂)
Typically people won’t say “Tim Horton’s” you’ll hear “Timmie’s”
In Ontario, the liquor store is called the LCBO, sometimes affectionately called “lickbo”
“Give’er” is a funny one, meaning like “give it your all”. I feel like older people say it more, my dad said it a lot when teaching me to drive lol. Definitely used by hockey parents
