Looking vs. The L World- Prompt #1
In her journal article “Having It All Ways: The Tourist, the Traveler, and the Local in The L Word,” Candace Moore analyzes audience participation in the popular Showtime series The L Word. Throughout her analysis, she looks at the lesbian-themed drama and categorizes its viewers into tourists (straight viewers unfamiliar with queer culture), travelers (viewers not completely unfamiliar with queer culture who seek and know how to recognize authenticity), and locals (lesbian viewers who are already intimately familiar with this culture). Although she does make these distinctions, she also argues that lesbian viewers, even those from Southern California (where the show is set), can be tourists, because not all of the elements on the show will be an “authentic” representation to them. Because of this, lines between tourist, traveler, and local can become blurred.
The HBO series Looking is similar to that of The L Word; it follows a community of gay men in San Francisco, showing their relationships, their professional lives, and their sex lives. Much like The L Word, there are many references to elements primarily in gay culture that tourists of the show may not understand. From Grindr discussions, to constantly mentioning different gay labels (Twink, Bear, Otter, Jock), to main character Patrick giving himself an at-home enema before a big night with his boyfriend, the show Looking shows details of gay culture that may not make sense to people who aren’t already engaged in the culture. I feel as if I’m a traveler while watching the show because my best friend, along with many other close friends, are in the queer community. When I watch the show, I look for references that I know, and test the show’s authenticity based off of what I have learned from my friends over the years. At the same time I feel like a tourist when there are depictions of queer sex and other specific references that I’m oblivious to. At these times, I look to my friend Tyler for clarification. We always watch the show together, and he is somewhat of a local, in that he is gay and understands many of the issues that the men discuss on the show. At the same time, his inexperience with actual serious gay relationships and large gay communities makes him somewhat of a tourist himself, blurring the lines between local and tourists. Just as Moore says of The L Word, “for the queer viewer, the mediated reality of the show will never match up to reality.”
Moore also discusses how The L Word fights to appeal to the straight community by allowing straight viewers to see lesbian sex which utilizes familiar “tropes found in straight porn,” and also uses the main character Jenny (and her straight boyfriend Tim) as “vehicle[s] for straight tourists.” I think that it was these efforts that ultimately kept the straight audience happy and prevented them from feeling like complete tourists in a foreign culture. On the other hand, Looking was just sadly canceled because of low ratings, likely because it did not make attempts to directly appeal to the straight audience, and did not have many characters for straight viewers to relate to during their “tour” of San Francisco’s gay community.
