I'll never forget how pop culture critic Candice Frederick's The Shape of Water Review: The Problem With Inter-Species Romance somehow managed to piss off who I can only assume are legions of (mostly white) uppity monster fuckers. All because she found the central romance to be an unengaging “male-gazey woman-on-monster relationship.”
Over 70,000 notes on this post, because so many monster fuckers are so outraged over how not everyone always finds the monster-man <3 human-white woman romance cliche endearing, sexy, or interesting. 🙄
If most of these people reacting to this post actually read the review, they’d know that Frederick didn’t find the romance between Elisa and the amphibious creature to be convincing or compelling, and that assessment isn’t worth the absolute ire and ridicule she’s been getting. It’s also really important to note that Frederick is a black woman and as a black woman myself I can also relate to her criticism of the film and the focal cliche it so readily relies on.* I really get Frederick’s frustration with the often white-centric, stereotypically gendered, and forced Beauty and the Beast shtick, so outrage like this over her dislike of the film makes me think that...
You all really hate people who don’t care for the often white-centric, stereotypically gendered, and forced Beauty and the Beast shtick, huh?🤷🏽♀️
*Candice Frederick, the author of the article, is a woman! Many people in the notes of Blaine’s post are still claiming she’s a man because… I don’t know, they’ve convinced themselves that all women would lust after a fish man! 🤪
