First off, let me start by saying how much I loved loved loved this movie. Very rarely am I brought to actual tears by a movie, let alone a horror movie. But everything about this movie, to me, was just absolutely beautiful.
Now with that being said, let me start with saying that the cast was amazing. Yahya Abdul-Mateen had big shoes to fill but I really feel like he step into them with ease. His confusion, his fear, his obsession, every emotion he plays during this movie was done so beautifully. It was almost as if I was experiencing everything along side him.
And let's be honest. What is a leading man without their leading lady?? Teyonah Parris. I can not express how moved I was by her character in this movie. 1) strong, independent women. 2) funny, witty. 3) JUST A BAD BITCH ALL THE WAY ROUND! Her performance in the end is what brought me to tears.
I enjoyed the original movie. It's been a while since I have rewatched it to be completely honest but, I do feel as though they did a great job with the story. This wasn't so much a remake (as I went in thinking it was) as much it was a continuation. Full circle. Aside from keeping up with the horror of the original story while making it it's own, it also brought attention to the much needed horror of real life.
A horror that is the day to day life for African Americans in the US. It's devastating and absolutely disgusting that racism and discrimination are still so prominent in 2021 but it is and you can not bury your head in the sand forever. Candyman could be anyone.
The metaphor for Candyman was so well explained and just portrayed that I feel like anyone who tries to turn a blind eye can not while watching this movie.
This movie definitely accomplished what it set out to do. Bring attention to our own lives while keeping that supernatural entertainment element.
Entertaining. Moving. Infuriating. I will for sure recommend this movie to anyone and everyone who asks. 10/10
