The air was colder today than yesterday, Younghee noticed. She froze more than normal whenever she went outside of the shelter. The kids were playing and entertaining themselves indoors because there was ice outside. It was too risky. The adults forbade it. They would not have another injured child crying at night. The medicine was costly and they were poor enough. Younghee came the day before and she was already regretting.
She was there on the steps, her bum cold but she was also bored. She used a stick to trace words and figures on the thin layer of snow. She was just passing time as usual. Reflecting mostly. On what she should do with her life. Her only family probably loathed her for running away. But even more so for kissing that girl in her room. She felt a rush of heat course through her body because of the kiss and she didn’t know what would’ve happened had they been left undisturned. With a sigh, she threw the stick on the backyard. “I fucking hate this place,” she said loud enough.
With a swift rise from the steps, she walked down each step, slipping almost but not quite yet. She braved the ice that was masked by the illusion of soft white snow. It was cold. Her feet were numb already. She was only given slippers to wear, after all. She kicked each snow pile and raged, expressing her anger, sadness and frustration. All of those trapped in her little body.
