Today I came in contact with the most disgusting form of pseudo-democracy I have ever witnessed in Canada. I was in the store talking with my friend about the U.S. Election, stating some concerns about who might win tomorrow, joking around about how it's crazy...when a young man walks up and tells us both to, "Shut your[our] mouths!".
An American election between a bigoted, sexist, self-absorbed Business failure and a Corrupt, questionably-qualified, PC, fake money politician, really isn't something that Canadians IN CANADA should be trying to pick fights over.
Democracy requires freedom of speech to function properly. Conflicting points of view are MANDATORY and are one of the most important parts of shaping a political landscape.
People that would defend their point of view simply by threatening, insulting, devaluing or intimidating their opposing view, are simply not acting in a democratic way.
When people start fighting and squelching and stifling the expression of viewpoints in PUBLIC places, there is a problem.
I very much hope that this young man reconsiders NOT his political opinion, because that I fully support him having, but his choice of outward expression of dissatisfaction with people holding a different view.
You are walking in a direction that begins to enable authoritarianism. That's kinda how dictatorships take root.
I’m not angry at you, but I am disgusted with your behavior. "I respect you too much to respect your ridiculous beliefs."
Let's not imitate what is happening in the United States. I like my Country and it's people.
