This Fourth of July, we commemorate our very first president and renowned hemp farmer George Washington. Currently illegal in America, hemp was grown on all five farms of Mount Vernon by our first leader. Hemp was widely used for roping, clothing, thread, canvas, and fish nets. Starting off as a leading cash crop, Washington later focused prominently on its industrial needs for his farms. Though hemp differs from cannabis with its less than .3% THC, history will show our continuous use and need for cannabis for various applications. From industrial hemp to medicinal marijuana, this versatile plant has presented timeless opportunities for our health and well being. Happy Fourth of July, stay safe and stay high!

Nicci's Pickles is this months highlight in Roots Of Our Community. Starting in the food industry as a self-made cook, then branching out to entrepreneurial aspirations, she has made great strides in the last two years of business. She's been stacking jars and winning awards, but where did it all really start? Growing up with a Polish family, Nicci learned at an early age about self sustainability through gardening and pickling, amongst other traits. In search of an alternative remedy, her mother in law was assisted by infused pickle juice. This was a new venture for Nicci, and it took much time for research and multiple trials to perfect the recipe we now know. While overcoming many strenuous hardships and providing for her family, Nicci hasn't let anything get in the way of success. Meanwhile, she also dedicates time and resources to various community based charities, events, and fundraisers. Adamant about helping other aspiring entrepreneurs, Nicci gave us her piece of best advice. "Hoan in on one product and perfect it, something you really care about." Vapor pressure deficit with agriculture refers to the difference of vapor in the plant as opposed to the vapor in the air surrounding the plant. This environmental variable is important for a plant to exume to facilitate water intake. If the VPD is too low, this means the air is too saturated and typically lower in temperature, which will slow or stop the plant from prespiring and could cause the stomata to close or host pathogens. If the VPD is too high, the air is too dry and more than likely too hot. This will force the plant to prespire and drink rapidly, causing great stress. If plants "sweat" too quickly, it can cause nutrient difficiencies, and around 85 degrees cannabis will start to shut down. Optimal VPD ratios vary depending on whether there's a dry or wet bulb, relative humidity, temperature, growth stages, strains, and other factors. Controlling the VPD with proper HVAC setup can provide many health benefits such as controlled carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nutrient intake, regulate plant stress, as well as stomata, and root health. Transpiration is essential to push out the nutrient deprived water within the cells and pull in more nutrient rich feed. Absolute control over the VPD can increase yield and quality drastically.
