Sybil gets a glimpse of the past and present, Thomas receives a warning, and Mary makes an announcement.
Sorry, sorry, sorry for the delay! Life has been crazy, and it’s finally calmed down…just before all the excitement kicks in here. :)
No Chelsie in this chapter. I would say skip it if you don’t care about anyone else, but if you care about Chelsie, you should read this chapter. It maybesortofkindofmightbe important.
:)
The King of Carlisle was a rare mortal that Sybil could not see clearly. He was opaque; his mind constantly moved, like the foaming sea in a storm.
He had called her slippery. He was the slippery one.
Not for the first time she wished Tom was there – her husband would see through Carlisle.
“That is not your affair,” the king hissed, his forehead wrinkled. “You ask questions, but you will get no answers. If I were you,” he took another step towards her, “I would be very, very careful. Stop meddling where you are not wanted. Do you understand me?” He reached out and clamped a hand on her arm.
Sybil felt a surge of triumph. He had touched her, and she could finally see.
Images swirled around her. They were from Carlisle’s perspective, people and places he had seen.
Through all of his memories, Sybil sensed the man’s overwhelming impatience. He was searching for something. Something he wanted above all else.
The walls of the king’s hall loomed behind Carlisle, the moon shining above. But it was dark beneath the trees. A hooded figure stood before the king.
“Fool!” hissed Carlisle. “Why did you kill him? There was no need to be so reckless!” He struck the other person in the face, hard.
The figure gasped, and staggered with the force of the blow. “There was every need.” It was a man’s voice. Confident. Smooth. “If the stupid lad had told me what I asked at the start, he would not have had to suffer. Then once he knew what I sought, I could hardly let him scurry back here and blab everything-“
“That was YOUR fault. Had you been cleverer, you would not have had to tell him anything, and thus let him go. I know you. You enjoy playing with your prey…Because of you, now everyone is on edge,” snarled Carlisle. “The king and Lady Mary know the boy was murdered. So do the Hexhams. If someone finds out that one of my servants was responsible, I will kill you myself. I do not hesitate to put down dogs after they have lost their usefulness,” he whispered.
“Ah, but I am still useful to you.” The man took a step forward, his face hidden in shadow. “I am a dog, but I am your loyal dog. Remember what I have done for you.”
“Remember that you are a servant, and you go nowhere without my leave,” Carlisle snapped. “I am not interested in what you have done for me. I want to know what you are doing for me now, other than amusing yourself, and putting my plans at risk. Well? Did you find the place?”
“I did.”
“And?” Carlisle demanded. In the distance, a dog howled.
Chuckling low in his throat, the man smiled. His white teeth were visible. “The key you seek, the key to your plan, is in your hand.”
The woods disappeared around them, and once again it was day. Carlisle and Lady Mary were with Master George. The king’s daughter held the bridle of a pony as her little boy rode. Thomas walked behind them at a respectful distance.
Thomas serving Carlisle wine, placing a cloak around his shoulders.
Thomas telling him about the kingdom.
Thomas standing at attention while the court reclined at table.
Carlisle watching Thomas in the courtyard from above. Seeing him read a scroll with a slight smile on his face. Watching him talk with Edward, noticing how close the young men stood together…
“I said, do you understand me?” Carlisle growled. Sybil gasped, and felt the floor beneath her feet. She met the tall man’s eyes. His fingers dug into her arm.
“Yes,” she said, not looking away.
She knew what the king wanted.
He wants Thomas. His mind is consumed by him, even more than by Lady Mary.
Thomas is the key to Carlisle’s plan.
