Join us for our 1st Featured Exhibit of 2017!

This Friday, March 31 we are hosting a featured exhibit of paintings by Jeffery Nodelman titled, “The Making of an Artist: Creative Inspirations”. The opening night reception is 6-8:00. This celebration will double as our reveal of the recent streamlining/remodel. Customers have entered our gallery through the 8206 door in the Cantrell Heights shopping center since the building was constructed in 1976, but our new front door is #8208.

Only available on opening night! Nodelman was one of the animators on the TV show, Doug and he has done a special painting of Doug with Porkchop that will be auctioned during the reception. All of the proceeds from this piece will go to CARE.

“The Making of an Artist: Creative Inspirations” will continue through Saturday, May 6. Regular gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10-5:00. We hope if you can’t make it to the opening night celebration you will come by some other time to see this exhibit and our fresh new look.

Artist Statement: “The Making of and Artist: Creative Inspirations is made up of images of my favorite writers, actors, and musicians that made me believe in the power of daydreaming. These characters inspired me to create this body of work.

We rescued our dog Ranger through CARE two years ago, and ever since I have been trying to help them through my art. The proceeds from drawings I have done of Disney characters at the River City Comic Con have gone to CARE, and I have donated paintings to them for some of their benefit events. This exhibit will also benefit CARE – thank you for your support.”

As an award winning illustrator and animator, Jeffrey Nodelman has spent over 20 years in the arts and entertainment industry. With a star on the Walt Disney Television Animation “Walk of Fame” his career includes television and film work at: Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Miramax, D.C. Comics and Tokyopop.  Not one to typically show his personal work outside of family and friends, his last gallery exhibit was a screening of his short film, “The Tree Elves” as a Presidential pick for Earth Day at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Currently, Mr. Nodelman is the Vice President of Marketing and Media for ATA International and lives in Little Rock, AR with his family and rescue dogs.

This exhibit marks Wooldridge’s forth solo exhibit at Cantrell Gallery. Join us for the opening night celebration on Friday, September 9, 6-8:00. The reception will be a great opportunity to meet the artist while viewing his latest works.

Artist Statement for “Always Coming Home”

“This grouping of paintings represents the longing for roots sunk deep into the soil; memories and places lost to time.  As such, it is an idealization of the place where I feel I belong: the Ozarks.

I am driven by the beauty of nature and the place of humans within it.  I have a predilection for those themes with which I am most familiar and which were meaningful to me in my childhood. Streams, rivers and bodies of water hold a particular fascination as do small towns and the fading remnants of our civilization, so quickly reclaimed by the land.

One of my primary goals is to engage the viewer with their own personal narrative.  By using sparse, preferential detailing and mood invoking limited palettes, I seek to provide the viewer with a simple context and framework upon which they can flesh out detail drawn from their own experiences. In this manner, the connection is deep and personal and beyond that which could be accomplished by verbosity of detail.

Bio

John Wooldridge is a native Arkansan with deep roots in the Ozark Mountains. He spent many hours of his formative years drawing and roaming on his family’s 200 acre cattle farm.  Wooldridge indulged a love of art and a desire to learn to paint as a very young teen by taking his only lessons in a local atelier-like setting.  Aside from these lessons and the odd workshop now and then, he is self-taught. After receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, Wooldridge moved his young family to the suburbs of Washington D.C. to pursue a career with NASA.  He designed, built, and operated systems in orbit around Earth and on the surface of Mars.

“Stop the Presses!” Save the Date

The talented employees of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette return to Cantrell Gallery for the latest edition of “Stop the Presses!” - the art of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.  This is a show you will not want to miss.  We have hosted this group exhibit many times in the past, but it’s been about 6 years since the most recent. We are excited to have this group back. There is much more talent than just what you see in the paper each day!

The show and sale of art by employees of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette will open with a reception on Friday, July 8; 6 - 8:00 pm. Mark your calendar now. Come meet the artists!  

Exhibiting in the show will be some familiar names from the pages of the newspaper including: John Deering who is editorial cartoonist and creator of the nationally syndicated comics "Zack Hill" and "Strange Brew"; Cary Jenkins, Bridal editor and accomplished photographer; Benjamin Krain, photographer, who has won numerous awards for his photography and has shown at the Arkansas Arts Center's Delta Exhibition; John Sykes Jr., chief photographer, specializes in computer art/photography; Celia Storey, editor of Monday Style section which is focused on fitness and health and is a potter; Ron Wolfe, award-winning features writer and works in watercolor & illustration; Nikki Dawes, graphic artist, works in a number of visual mediums including acrylic and digital art; Kirk Montgomery, assistant managing editor for graphics and design, paints in acrylic and oil.

“Stop the Presses!” will continue through September 3 during gallery hours, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Saturday. Note: Cantrell Gallery will be closed from July 15 at 2:00 – July 18 at 10:00 am.

May 13 – July 2: Kae Barron

Kae Barron’s First Ever One-Person Exhibit! “Black Box”, an exhibit of all new art by local artist, Kae Barron will be on display at Cantrell Gallery.

There will be an opening night reception on Friday, May 13, 6-8:00. This event is free and open to the public.

The artist will be present, so it’s a great opportunity to meet her, while viewing her works.

Artist Statement: “After completing most of the works for this show, I decided to do a painting I would call ‘Black Box’. It occurred to me that this might be a good title for the show. ‘Black Box’ can be a metaphor for the inscrutability of the inner workings of things -- animals, people, life, the universe -- a theme which runs through my work. An inherent aspect of human experience, mystery can sometimes be pleasant and awe-inspiring, sometimes immensely frustrating and scary. ‘Black Box’ symbolizes a range of things I feel are relevant to my thinking and my work. From the black box of psychology (the mind as a black box) to those of literature ("The Lottery"), and science (quantum physics and computer science) -- mystery, danger and the randomness of chance are handily encapsulated. This show contains acrylic, watercolor and egg tempera paintings along with linocut and intaglio prints. I hope you enjoy it!” –Kae Barron Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Kae Barron has lived for many years with her husband, Danny, and their dogs near Benton, Arkansas. She has a degree in psychology and works as a machine-embroidery designer. She has a wide range of interests which influence her art, including animals, music, literature, psychology, philosophy and science. She has enjoyed drawing, painting and sculpture most of her life. Her work has been exhibited and won awards in local, regional and national juried shows.

March 11 – May 7: Daniel Coston

The opening night reception for BEYOND THE PHOTOGRAPHS, an exhibit of paintings by Arkansas artist, Daniel Coston, will be on Friday, March 11, 6-8:00. Please join us! It will be a great opportunity to visit with the artist while viewing his works. If you can’t make it that evening, the show will continue through May 7.

Artist Statement, BEYOND THE PHOTOGRAPHS

“Every year I take a lot of reference snapshots of Arkansas that I add to an ever-growing archive. Many of the images are useless but a few remind me of things I saw as a kid in Southeastern Arkansas. Some even seem iconic to me, expressing something about the geography we call home.

So I work on these pictures...drawing the scenes until I think I can do something worthwhile. These photos evoke memories in me. I want to bring these memories back. At times, the memories could be about the sunlight on a particular day...the sky in December...the thunderheads boiling up over a field.

I call this show BEYOND THE PHOTOGRAPHS because the ideas for most paintings come from a snapshot. As I work up the painting, I have to expand the visual information in order to make it work. One thing I almost always do is to look into the shadows so I can understand what is hidden and bring those things into view. The photos are what I start with but they are not what I finish with.

I intentionally take snapshots because I don’t want to copy a wonderfully detailed photo. My goal is to take the visual information and build it up into the world I remember seeing last year or even when I was just a kid.”

Daniel Coston is a native of Monticello, Arkansas. He completed his BA in Art from Harding University in 1968. He predominantly paints with acrylic, but his style is influenced by Eakins, Hopper, and Wyeth. Coston has had solo shows at Cantrell Gallery (Little Rock) and Aerie Art (Rehoboth Beach, DE). His paintings are in numerous public and private collections and have been included in the Arkansas Arts Center’s Delta Exhibition. He lives and works in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
