Artist Statement:
“After completing most of the works for this show, I decided to do a painting I would call ‘Black Box’. It occurred to me that this might be a good title for the show. ‘Black Box’ can be a metaphor for the inscrutability of the inner workings of things -- animals, people, life, the universe -- a theme which runs through my work. An inherent aspect of human experience, mystery can sometimes be pleasant and awe-inspiring, sometimes immensely frustrating and scary. ‘Black Box’ symbolizes a range of things I feel are relevant to my thinking and my work. From the black box of psychology (the mind as a black box) to those of literature ("The Lottery"), and science (quantum physics and computer science) -- mystery, danger and the randomness of chance are handily encapsulated.
This show contains acrylic, watercolor and egg tempera paintings along with linocut and intaglio prints. I hope you enjoy it!” –Kae Barron
