“Canvas Makeover”
Sometimes canvas can be expensive, especially the large artist-quality ones. And unfortunately the Michael’s 50% off coupon doesn’t come all that often. Even then the cost can be more than I want to pay. As a result I try to find canvas elsewhere, such as thrift stores or the clearance section of a home décor store. That’s where I found this canvas before I painted over it.
I was in my local Home Sense a few weeks ago when I came across a large canvas print for only $12.99. That’s a great deal for a canvas of this size. The original image was some kind of pop art portrait of a woman, which didn’t look bad I’ll admit. But I knew I could paint something better over it.
So I covered it with a layer of gesso and then painted it using a dragging technique. The finishing touches were ink and foil. I’ve had a huge bottle of India ink on my shelf for some time now and thought it would add a nice bit of contrast to the bright background. Once that was dry I lined the edges with foil glue, which had to dry overnight. Eventually I added on the gold foil to give it some sparkle. It may have started as a generic printed canvas, but now it’s one of a kind.
