Vietnam & Cambodia 2012 - More of the incredibly colourful Cao Dai temple outside of Ho Chi Minh City. Looks like yellow trumps blue. Caodaism is one of the newer world religions, formally constituted in 1926, apparently

Cao Dai Temple
The Cao Dai Temple was finished in 1955 when the Cao Dai Army was formed following the Japanese occupation of Indochina. Caodaists believe that all religions are ultimately the same and seek to promote tolerance throughout the world. The Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Muhammad and Confucius, in addition to Joan of Arc and Julius Cesar are all honoured at this temple. There are nine hierarchies of worship including a pope, cardinals and archbishop with festivals, rituals and prayer all practiced regularly. The temple is similar in design to a Christian Cathedral featuring side aisles and an altar, as well as a long central nave, all positioned as they would be in a Christian Church, there is even a high dome decorated with clouds and saints. The main focal point is a Divine Eye symbolising God which has the Ying and Yang icon in its pupil. Ceremonies take place daily with two services accompanied by musicians and a choir singing in English to traditional Vietnamese music. MORE

Travelling through Vietnam – Củ Chi tunnels Cao Đài Holy See
What a day!
We were picked up at 7:30am and drove 1.5 hour to go visit the Cu Chi tunnels. Never discovered by American forces, these tunnels were an important Vietcong base during the war and stretch more than 200 km (125 mi). The underground network, dug by hand out of hard laterite with simple shovels and makeshift tools made up of parts from recycled American weapons, connected a command…

Cao Dai Temple • Tây Ninh • Vietnam •
This is a fascinating young religion. Founded in 1921 in Vietnam, Cao Daism is a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism...with a little bit of Christianity mixed in. Their main symbol is the Divine Left Eye of God (representing the masculine Yang), who is balanced out by the Holy Mother Goddess (representing the Yin). These two Father and Mother energies created the world and universe we live in.
Here’s the interesting part. Worshippers believe that God has revealed the eternal truth to many prophets, and these in turn have been interpreted by different religious figures - in the second photo, you can see Buddha, Confucius, Lao-Tze and even Jesus Christ depicted above the main altar of the temple we visited. I was told the Cao Dai Pantheon includes historical figures such as Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, Muhammad and Moses. An interesting faith to say the least.
The temple itself had a Western style layout, with Eastern decoration/aesthetics. It was very interesting to see such a mixed hybrid of theology; I highly recommend you read more on it. It certainly fascinated me. Anyway, last temple photo from Vietnam, I promise!
