Kanyakumari, India
cape comorin 2013
The penultimate leg - southern tip of India and up!
Day 20: Much to my annoyance we left Varkala and were back on the road for a 10 hr drive to Madurai, stopping off at the southernmost tip of the Indian peninsular , Kanyakumari. Sometimes referred to as Cape Comorin. This also meant I was unable to watch Murray in the Australian Open final. Damn it! However, my frustration was short lived as we got to Madurai just as the boys started the fourth and final set! It wasn't to be for Murray, Djokovic was on a mission to make Aus Open history! Day 21: A short (ish) drive and we arrived in Tiruchirappalli, more commonly known as Trichy. The town is famous for its Rock Fort which means "city of the scared rock". We made our way over there in the baking afternoon sun and proceeded to climb the 434 steps resulting in magnificent views of the town and surrounding plains below. After giving our quads a brief workout it was on to the temple complex of Sri Ranganathaswamy which is set on the island of Srivangam, covers some 2 1/2 sq km's and consists of 21 gopurams - huge ornately decorated and carved towers. While we were there we were lucky enough to catch the end of an annual religious possession and ritual. I don't think any of us had a clue what was going on but it was great viewing and I got some good pictures. If we had arrived the day before we would have seen the gigantic 4m wooden chariot being pulled round the town by locals and any tourist that wanted to lend a hand. It looked like a real life prop from Troy! After finally encountering some fast wiff, I spent the evening updating the blog and planning my imminent return to the UK - I now have a long to do list. Choice! JD
