The South African perennial bulb Haemanthus coccineus (Cape tulip, blood lily, red Cape flower, paintbrush lily) produces short stems each bearing an umbel of small red flowers, surrounded by showy scarlet bracts. A pair of strap-shaped leaves appear after the flowers.

In the cool glasshouse of Cambridge University Botanic Garden, UK, the Haemanthus coccineus (Cape tulip, blood lily, African tulip, blood flower, April fool) was starting to flower. This South African perennial flowers in late summer from the underground bulbs, the strap-like leaves normally grow after the flowers.
