More than 1,000 people gathered in Albany Monday to send a strong message to Gov. Andrew Cuomo that they don't want fracking in New York.
I found out about the rally Sunday afternoon through Twitter and was hoping that I would be able to go Monday, even for a short while.
Luckily, I was able to. And it was a pretty awesome experience.
Signs were held left and right saying "Don't Frack New York," "NY Says No Fracking," "No Eminent Domain, No Pipeline Period," and "No Drill, No Spill."
T-shirts, buttons, and stickers portayed many other slogans.
Well-known activists, like Sandra Steingraber, Bill McKibben, and Josh Fox, joined them.
And the people were yelling about what they fear will happen to their communities if fracking is allowed in the state.
It reminded me a lot of Ithaca, from covering the the anti-fracking rallies in the city to the topic just constantly being on my radar when I was there.
This year has been interesting since graduating. I've moved into the journalism field and have had little time for my other degree...my other passion...environmental studies.
Being at the rally today, even though I couldn't be there very long, was a reminder of not only how important our health is, but how important Ma Earth is and all she provides.
I have to commend those who rallied in the capital today to show Cuomo just how important this decision is.
So do we frack New York? Or don't we? I guess we'll see.
Until Cuomo's decision....
