I'll Be Home For Christmas~
Snow danced delicately across district twelve – what was still there and what was rebuilt. The days, long and dark often kept the mockingjay awake without sleep. Suffering from the loss of her sister and those closest to her, the overthrow of both Snow and Coin had taken its toll. That once stubborn, hard headed, fiery girl was now broken, crumbled and left to wait til she died… or if she could ever be that lucky.
But the months came and went and now the holidays came around, the people of twelve celebrating a Christmas without the captiol reigns and with their freedom. Greasy Sae mentioned to go to town, but instead Katniss peered to the fire as she held tight to her own legs, secured by her chest and draped under a blanket. Almost year since she lost herself completely. Almost a year since Prim passed away, since her mother and Gale left her alone.
There was nothing that felt like home, even Haymitch hard visited and he was just right next door. Every now and then while on the phone with Doctor Aurelius she’d hear a small snippet of Peeta’s progress – he’s doing better. No negative outbursts. He’s clear to come home soon.
Despite the kind words, however, Katniss wasn’t sure if she could handle facing Peeta – not after everything that happened… but it would be nice to have someone there. No one really knew Katniss as much as the dandelion did. She was an open book.
The knock at her door startled her, the girl on fire quickly shaken up and breathing hard before she finally made her way over. It was probably someone else begging her to join everyone at the new hob for Christmas dinner, so when Katniss pried open the door her face was not welcoming.
But… there was something wrong. The silhouette before her was not someone from the districts, at least who she had expected. No. Soft curly locks and eyes painted blue stared back. Everything about her demeanor changed, went from mad to confused to… well. The only thing she did next was slam the door back in his face and panic.
Gentle she pinched herself to make sure she was awake, before opening the door again and still seeing Peeta standing there. A sigh escaped her lips as she stared at him for a moment, the cold from the winter air tickling her cheeks and making them red.
“What… what are you doing here?” She was in disbelief, at a lost for words as she simply watched him and waiting to see if in fact he were real and could even talk back. She hadn’t made a Christmas wish this year, but if she had… having Peeta home would be the top one.
