Hill Farmstead's Susan IPA on tap at Capone's in Norristown, PA. A 4 of 4. Incredible color and lots of tropical fruit and floral notes in the nose. Don't expect to be beat over the head with the hops here, this is beautifully restrained and quite excellent.
Vitamin Sea Brewing Squared Circle IPA (Picked up at Capone's in Norristown, PA). A 4 of 4. Big, bright tropical fruit notes in this -- the complexity sets it apart from this. Mostly orange/grapefruit driven, though there's plenty of other more subtle notes going on, and the body is incredibly opaque and soft on the palate. There's a nice herbal/resinous quality in the body that cuts through the relatively sweet juiciness and leaves a clean finish.
Other Half Instant Greens IPA (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 4 of 4. Really bright tropical fruit in this as well as lots of other citrus and stone fruit and coconut, somehow. The body follows the nose but the nose is where the complexity is. Lighter-bodied and drinks easily with a nice tropical sweetness and light bitterness in the finish.
Drowned Lands Brewery Leasow Double IPA (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 4 of 4. Lots of really great and bright tropical fruit on this as well as coconut and almost an apple-like presence. The nose is pungent and great, and the body seems to have even more complexity with more herbal/floral notes there and a relatively resinous finish alongside the booze that kicks in. This beer has a lot going on and it somehow doesn’t feel discordant. Excellent.
Foreign Objects Can’t Go Wrong Without You (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 3 of 4. Smells more floral up front with some tropical fruit behind it. Not aggressively pungent in the nose, and the body delivers many of the same qualities with a little bit of resin and tea-like qualities mid-body. Pretty well-balanced, and finishes clean and dry, but not really my favorite from them.
Decadent Ales Bacon French Toast IPA (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 2 of 4. This is quite weird, not always in a good way. I don’t get much bacon at all, or much smoke/salt or anything reminiscent of it. I do get quite a bit of maple syrup sweetness in the body with some interesting brown sugar and candy notes. Not really that bitter in the body up front, although there is some pine-like hop notes cutting the sweetness and lingering in the finish. Happy I split the can, as it’s a bit much to have quite a lot of.
Victory’s Liberty Bell Ringer DDH DIPA (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 3 of 4. Lots of tropical and some floral notes in the nose with a bit of citrus in the background. Some fruity sweetness up front that quickly fades to a firm, clean bitterness and a touch of resin in the finish. Nice stuff, and hides the 8.7% ABV well -- scarily easy to drink for a beer this big.
SingleCut Beersmiths Electric Blue IPA (Picked up at Capone’s in Norristown, PA). A 4 of 4. Incredibly hazy and thick-looking -- almost looks like straight juice. Mostly orange citrus in the nose, and a more complex tropical citrus alongside some white-wine like notes in the body. Some spicy / resinous notes in the finish, and finishes quite dry despite the creamy and sweet body. Massively juicy, but better balanced than some.
