A New Me

I imagine you are aware of what happened when you, Ander and whomever the new one is tried to bring Audi’s soul back. It was his idea. I don’t trust your band of “friends” not to kill me if they figure this out. I know where he is, and I do not want him stuck there either. I guess you read through this diary, somehow? Let’s talk. Just know up front that I am not going back there.

Further, let me be very clear about this. Stop reading this journal. If I need to speak with you after this, I will find a way to do so in private. The remainder of this will be for Audi, for his use should his body reject my soul. Perhaps you can try your hand at moderate privacy? See if you enjoy it.

Dearest Audi Fuentes,

Your body is itchy, and to answer your earlier question, you do stink a like a celestial. It gave me a headache at first, but I guess I am used to it now, more or less.

I wish you had kept writing in this diary. I have no clue as to what you and your friends were doing for the past month. What are these objects that we are destroying, and who is the second celestial, the one that is off slightly? I find it difficult to believe that your writing could have become less useful after you lost your soul. I suppose it would not have been nearly as funny, however. At the very least, acting as if I know what is going on makes talking to your friends interesting. We should have discussed all of this after you found me in that place.

I mean this sincerely, thank you for that. I will make sure you leave there, Audi. It is no place for you.

I truly didn’t know the extent of what I meant to you, and I regret that you were so tormented while I was away. I can’t think of another person who would work so diligently towards my happiness. You are special.

Also, I couldn’t help but notice the curse placed on your body before I took charge. Were you aware of this? When my power is restored and we are both in our intended forms, I can help you harness it. In the meantime, thank you for the present.

Trust

This month, Captain Rowen has pulled me aside two times. One time to teach me how to shave (which I have to do all the time now) and then to tell me what they found in the dwarven mine after I got lost. The ground elves have been taking children and experimenting on them. Those monsters we fought weren’t monsters, or at least they hadn’t been at one point. My friends had been keeping this from me for weeks. I guess they were worried I wouldn’t be able to handle it, with all the stuff that’s gone on lately. Who would have guessed I have a soft spot for people taking and hurting kids.

I really try not to think that a whole group of people are bad just because of what they are. I’ve had a bunch of types of friends, and I don’t look like what I am either, you know? Even this trip, we ran across a dude taking a nap and he tried to kill Ander. Then we ran across some goblins and they were super nice, doing Celestial magic even. Still, I think I might have been wrong about the ground elves. I think they’re bad, maybe all bad. I understand what we’re doing now. We gotta stop em.

I’m sorta upset that Rowen didn’t tell me sooner. I know the others usually treat me like a kid, but he’s never done that. It’s just like my parents did when Jace died. I don’t remember when Godlove came and got him from our village (I was only like two years old) but I remember his family. I remember that things got different at some point and people stopped looking at me in the eye. The whole village knew that I’d be the next kid to go with Godlove, and they all prolly felt guilty, but I didn’t know that. I basically grew up feeling like a ghost until my parents finally told me what happened to Jace. Then it at least made sense.

Anyway, we’re in Kalur Rith again, or the spot it used to be. The ground elves have a base in the middle of this lava river and the energy here is unbalanced. The winds told me that umbral energy is coming up around the whole continent, but it’s really bad here. There are patches of ground that are totally drained. I scouted the base and it’s full of the elves hiding behind some magic. Going at them that way is a very bad call, they almost shot me up bad.

We found a tunnel guarded by more of the ground elves experiments. We tried to fix them but it didn’t work. It’s probably better that they’re dead than being what they were, but there has to be some way to get them back. I’m going to call Maxi and tell her all this. The Horned Guard is still really new, but we might need backup at some point.

We’re going in the tunnel soon. I don’t know if I can face those things again, the things that used to be kids. But I guess I will.

I should, I don’t know, I guess I should write down the vision that those Goblins gave me though before I forget. The ones casting celestial magic were seers. I don’t know Goblin, but I asked about Julia as best I could. I saw myself in this white uniform with her staff above my head. Before me, there was this blinding white light ahead of me. It had what I needed.

I don’t know about visions much. I don’t know if it’ll help or anything, mostly I was just hoping that I’d get to see her laugh again. Maybe get to see things being normal again one day, though I guess our normal has always been pretty weird.

All this has to work out, at least I hope.

This should not have surprised me, but when I arrived everything was a complete mess. The structure was fine, true, stationed by the cliff side catching the sea breeze, but the building had been ransacked and abandoned. This is always Audi. Big dreams and little thought to the details. Still, he was able to convince Godlove of something, and that’s more than I ever accomplished.

But I am unsure. You did hear about home, right? I wonder if that convinced him more than anything. No more little town desperate to please him, no more kids to take on magical adventures.

But, enough gossip. I am pulling things together here. We got our first few volunteers and they let their children “apprentice” with me as door-guards. I do not like real children. They learned not to try to play with me. We have a supply of cheap silver from some dwarven mine Audi and his “new friends” helped out. We are even running our first mission as I write you. I wish you had seen Gabi’s face when Godlove came to procure them. I worry she may lead them to quit!

I still think we could use you, Aria, especially with a little research Audi has me doing. “The only thing I ask,” he says! A warlock girl will soon arrive on a boat. She was one of Immortal Slaughter’s. I have no real idea how Audi won her favor, but the man is charming. Here is my concern, she consumed Slaughter and somehow was separated from her soul. Her corpse does not appear to decompose, and she cannot be healed. It is a lovely puzzle, but I can only wonder how Slaughter was consumed, and what her state may mean in that regard. Please reach out through the runes if this peaks your interest. I thought I remembered at least one run in you had with Slaughter’s people.
